See the Lobby Reinvented at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel

Posted: May 23, 2008 3:11:40 PM

While I was in Atlanta to volunteer at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, I also stopped by our newly renovated Atlanta Marriott Marquis hotel. When it opened in 1985, it was the city's largest hotel - and it still is. It was certainly known for its fantastic breakthrough design. Now, they've just completed a huge $140 million renovation and they've recaptured breakthrough design.

This hotel really sparkles. I was so impressed with the wonderful concierge lounge with a great view of the city, and with the new lobby, which really picks up our great room ideas - lots of places to sit and you can work your laptop.

I was impressed with the beautiful new ballroom - 25,000 square feet of gorgeous space with a lot of outside light coming into the room. We're trying to get more outside light into our ballrooms as we develop hotels in the future and this hotel did it just right.

We have the world's largest atrium - 47 stories - which was designed by the famous architect, John Portman.

And we have a lot of new food and beverage operations. We have Pulse, a fun, vibrant, high-energy cocktail lounge; Sear, the signature, fire-inspired restaurant and High Velocity, a massive sports bar - one of the biggest in Atlanta.

We have a brand new health club and spa with seven new treatment rooms and a beautiful workout area, and 160,000 square feet of meeting space.

The brand new cocktail lounge, Pulse, is right in the middle of the lobby and it's the center of all the action. It's a fantastic, unique design shaped like a sailboat, and the sail comes on in different colors.

I really think the hotel lobby, public space and restaurants embody the new direction we're taking our Marriott Hotels and Resorts brand.

I want to congratulate Erica Qualls, the general manager of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, and her team on the completion of this terrific renovation. It looks great and I know the guests are going to love it.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Comment: Love the Great Room concept and the look of the refurbished Atlanta property. You've really caught on something with this. What we really want is somewhere to sit, talk, plug in the laptop, get a great coffee and nice food with excellent service. Somewhere comfy, stylish and a stimulating environment. The Great Room concept seems to catch on this and make life easy for guests. Look forward to seeing this role out at more sites. Keep innovating and responding to guests!
