This Senseless Tragedy . . .
The situation is still unfolding. Right now, we can't confirm the number of people who have died or have been injured, but news reports are numbering it in the dozens, most of them Marriott employees.
This senseless tragedy and the profound loss of life has left me greatly saddened. My heart goes out to those who've been injured and the families of the victims.
We put a very high premium on security at Marriott. In this case, I salute the bravery of the security personnel who were right there when the suicide bomber struck. They had stopped the truck just outside the fortified gate. They were examining it when the bomb detonated. Sadly each member of the team was killed. These guys were defending the lives of hotel guests and their fellow co-workers. They were killed in the line of their duty.
Currently, our associates who escaped serious injury are doing whatever they can to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. The actions of these associates in Islamabad and their desire and willingness to help in a time of such tremendous tragedy are a true testament to Marriott's culture.
I want to thank everyone who has left comments of condolence on my blog.

Comment: Personally, I felt extreme shocked to see this massive incident with my eyes; I worked around 9 years in this great Hospitality Service at Marriott.Hotel as an Employee. I salute and appreciate all Security Officials & Security guards.(Specially ACSO Aamir Wasim, Masoud, Mouneeb, Javed, Yousaf) who sacrificed their most precious lives and fall martyred, at the spot during their duty manners and saved more precious others lives. They protected the Human Lives and whole building. I pray for better Heath and rapid recovery of all injured people. Those who are serious Injured in this incident. Especially Miss Mussart, Irfan, Mubisher, Zaher,Asim Bouncer, and among ,many. I strongly condemn this brutal act. I don't know what drives those murderers in doing such activities but they will not be prevailed. There's too much good in this world and those great people that died there, at work, in the line of duty or simply passing by, are the true expression of that good. I wish that this hospitality service should again start and reach to the maximum level of achievement. Everyone should stand together to fight these kind of immoral acts. We need to face these challenges for the country and its prestigious organizations, who really give great impression to the world.
Best Regard
Shoukat Ali Shah.

Comment: Dear Sir, I stay over 200 nights per year in your hotels. I can say that all of them make me feel safe and secure. It is a shame that some cowards feel the need to blow up inocent people and establishments for some warped cause. It is unfortunate that Marriott was the establishment that these terrorists chose as the target for their cowardice actions. It is of no reflection of your properties in any way. I hope these murders are caught and severly punished or even more.

Comment: Mr Marriott, I would like to pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty sacrificing their selves to save others. My heartiest condolences to the victim's families for such a tragic incident. Let's make this pledge that we will re-emerge and be triumphant. Those who seek to destroy us will not succeed. Let us make this pledge for those victims that their name lives on by starting the normal services back soon. I hope you do that and re-build the building that is the symbol of Islamabad and one of the most impressive sites.

Comment: Hey Bill, my heart goes out to all the victims, it is so sad to see this. I loved Marriott Islamabad and use to have good times way before it was Marriott when it was Holiday Inn. I remember walking across the street from Frontier House and meeting friends there for a cup of tea or meals.
Anyway, I am sure the Hashwani's will re-build the property but wanted to ensure that someone responsible takes care of the employees' relations and their families. They are deserving people and pretty much lost everything during this tragic event.
I hope that it won't happen again, something gets done to prevent this kind of shameless tragedy to be prevented for the future.
Not so sure how much influence you will have that far away but whatever you can do, do it for the employees who have lost their lives.
Good bless.

Comment: I lived at the Marriott Islamabad for over 5 months in 2006, many of the staff I regarded as friends and have continued to keep in contact with. I cannot express the horror and upset I feel at seeing what has happended. Nothing was ever too much trouble for any of them and they were so caring. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. I just hope that they will all get the care and help in the future that they have given in the past. I also hope that I will soon receive news of who is safe. Pakistan is such a beautiful country and the people so friendly it is a total tragedy that a few try to destroy what they should be celebrating.

Comment: Dear Mr. Marriot -- As a Pakistani i want to also offer my heartfelt sorrow for the loss of lives in my country.
these terrorists have no soul and are murderers with no sense of humanity. i wanted to use this section to BEG the international community to pray for Pakistan. We implore the community not to lose faith in Pakistan.
For the most part, it is a safe country but faced with some recent trouble which --God willingly --we will root out.
The criminals can never be allowed to succeed in their senseless and twisted agenda.
The security staff proved to be very brave and acted without regard for their own lives. Had that truck made its way to the entrance, the bloodhshed would have been worse five-fold.
Marriot hotel has always been a wonderful landmark in our capital city and seeing it in this state has hurt every Pakistani. The owner of the building has promised to rebuild it. By December 31 expect a new and improved Marriot Hotel God Willing.
Once again --dont lose your faith in my country. We are a nation of 173 million peace loving and God fearing people. We cannot let these misguided elements and thugs to change our way of life, our commerce, and the attitudes of our overseas friends
Rest in Peace to the victims. Down with the enemies of humanity!!!
God bless.

Comment: My heart goes out to the victims and their families. Many bodies would have been shattered and families would never be able to say good bye. Please provide compensations to the poor guards, door men and other staff, who were mostly sole breadwinners of their families and left behind no life insurance or savings, as is the case with the poorest in the country. That would be a bigger gesture than merely re-building the structure. Build it with a heart Mr. Marriott.

Mr Marriott, I would like to emphasise on a previous comment left by an individual, that we hope you take some action personally to ensure that any compensation awarded to the families of the victims is monitored and controlled by those whom you trust and are part of your close team in the West.
Unfortunately, and regrettably I have to say (as a Pakistani Muslim), in deprived countries such as Pakistan, such good gestures (Compensation) can sometimes open opportunities for those with wrong minds to influence the way compensations are dealt with and may not reach the true victims.
Best Wishes

Comment: Dear Bill and all of the Marriott family:
I am reminded of our President's beautiful words after the 9/11 attacks: We will NOT fear, We will NOT falter, We will NOT fail and we will NOT FORGET. Because the terrorists have not succeeded in attacking Americans again on our own soil, they attack American interests abroad, hoping to destroy our economy and our sense of security where they can. I hope that you will be able to rebuild and that God will comfort those who lost precious family members in this senseless act of stupidy. I also hope that the United States and her friends will continue to seek out Terrorists wherever they hide and eliminate them so the world can one day live in peace.

Comment: Dear Bill,
It sadly was a tragic incident and I believe the security was sufficient and somewhat well equipped. However more needs to be done through the Pakistani Government to ensure that this doesn't happen again and again.
Whenever I was in Islamabad Marriot was always on my agenda, whether it was a business trip or just to socialize with friends over a cup of espresso, Marriot always gave the amicable ambiance and service that always made my day.
Yes, at times security protocol was a bit annoying but nevertheless they had to do what they were supposed to do. My humble request is that these security personnel come from very low class income families and their families compensated with the same level integrity as they would be in U.S or Europe. There were brothers who lost their brothers, there were sisters who lost their brothers, there are sons/daughters who lost their fathers, there are elderly parents who lost their only dependent sons and finally there are widows who lost everything.
Compensation, if given, should be directly given to them from one your US representatives instead of forwarding them to the local representative. This will not only ensure some relief but will give a true image of U.S. people to these families and the country.
Regards,
Humayoun S.Khan

Please accept my deepest sympathy to the loss of life that was beyond your control and that of your Staff in Pakistan. As an MVCI owner and a holder of Platinum status with Marriott, your company is more of a second home than just a place to stay. I understand that there is a fine balance between Hospitality and Security, but if any premier hotel chain can strike this balance now and in the future, I am confident that it will be Marriott. I do have a suggestion. Please consider adding a DONATION BOX at each Marriott-owned property for the employees and families of those who have been impacted. You have many dedicated customers such as myself .... please give us the opportunity to give back to you. I would even consider helping with this effort as a volunteer if requested.

Comment: Mr Marriott
My words will not bring back those lost, but I would like to say the following anyhow.
I was working for the Phuket Marriott when the Tsunami came. I know how Marriott helped staff who lost their families and friends. I know how you flew Mr Kanjana (Dir. F&B) to the US to personally thank him for his actions.
I am aware of how Marriott cared for a staff member after he suffered a serious accident involving chemicals, even tgouth it was his own fault.
And me? I siffered a serious car accident which left me with a fractured spine. I could not work for 2 months. When I WAS fit enough to work, I was driven to and from work by a member of management. My job was left open for me to return to. And I was just the resident pianist.
What I am trying to say is, that it is good to know that all those affected will be cared for like no other hotel chain would care for them.
Regards
Stuart.

I respect of the people who lost their lives, our lives must go on. I will never change any of my travel plans in view of terrorist activities and continue to stay in Marriott Hotels both for both business and pleasure. I was injured in the Bomb blast in Manchester England (I was standing opposite the Renaissance hotel) so I also send my best wishes to the people who survived, they will need just as much care as those who were physically injured. Seeing that big Marriott sign still standing on top of the building reminds me of how happy I am each time I see that sign when I travel and stay at a Marriott. As a Life-Time Platimum member of Marriott, Marriott has been my home away from home for over a dozen years. I am confident that you will make the right decisions to take care of the Marriott associates' families in the tragedy and to keep the trust of your loyal customers to continue to want to stay at Marriotts.

Comment: This is the one of the most horrible tragedies I have seen in recent times. I have visited the Islamabad Marriott on many occasions. It is a beautiful 5 star hotel with amazing restaurants like Dynasty, Nadia's etc, cafes, elegant shops, and banquet halls where I have attended so many weddings and parties. I also frequented the Bassment Night Club in the hotel, and this hotel is a MAJOR landmark in Islamabad and beloved by so so so many. I am in profound shock that our world is turning into a hateful and violent hell. When I think of the helpful and gracious male and female staff of The Islamabad Marriott and to know that so many of them, along with guests have been killed in this senseless tragey, it makes me sick to my stomach. I am at a complete loss for words. This kind of barbarity knows no logic...

As a "westerner" during my times in Pakistan, I have had the privilege of spending time with many Pakistani families and as a nation, are some of the nicest, generous, caring individuals that I have ever met. I will be back in November, and though I will never forget or forgive the individuals that caused such destruction, this will not stop me from visiting your fine country and assisting the great people of Pakistan to rise above such tragedy, and hope these terrorists are brought to justice (Inshallah) x x x

This place was my sanctuary when my heart needed a break from the reality that Pakistan was finally started to climb out of. What sadness we all feel when terrorism, senseless acts of violence touch our lives. My heartfelt condolences to everyone in the corporation, here and abroad in the wake of this terrible tragedy. It is a dangerous world in which we live, nowhere moreso than in Pakistan, but to target this hotel is an act of cowardice on the part of the perpetrators. Please know that we, as a group of loyal customers, will not ever forget the sacrifice of your associates in this tragedy, and will honor their memory.
It would be simple to stop traveling, to avoid hotels, especially in this region, but to do so would allow the terrorists to achieve their goals--I for one will never let that happen.
We stand with you and the corporation in this time of tragedy.
God bless you all.

I as a Pakistan strongly condemn this attack & am amazed at the cruelty of one human being against another. What the security staff at the entrance did should not be just talked about and forgotten. These people who worked at less than a $100 salary per month, sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. They probably were the sole breadwinners of their families and hail from lower income group back grounds. Please consider this and compensate their families adequately so their children would not go through one tragedy after the other. They should be compensated directly and not through some other sources, like putting money directly into their wives or children's bank accounts.May Allah bless them and us all.

Comment: Bill,
In the wake of this tragedy it is important to note that the majority of those who were killed were security guards who put their lives to risk trying to ensure the bomber didn't enter the gates. As a Pakistani myself i know these people fall at the bottom of the social ladder with probably a salary around a $100 a month( if they are lucky). I would urge you to release information about these guards such as their bank accounts, or create a fund so people can donate money to the families of these heroes. Their families have not just lost a loved one but probably the sole bread winner. I can't imagine what they must be going through

The Islamabad Marriott is among the city's oldest and most loved of icons so almost all the city's residents, myself included (though I'm abroad these days), have some sort of a relationship with it. I can't begin to count the number of times I've been there and have enjoyed the warmth and hospitality of its staff. I even used to work in the big glass building right next to it.
It is terrible for something like this to have happened there and my heart goes out to all the people who have been injured or have lost loved ones in this tragedy. Comment: Dear Mr. Marriott:
Being a premier platinum member, I feel that I am part of the Marriott global family and I am terribly saddened by this cowardly act.
Your associates, and in this particular case your security personnel, are highly dedicated and always go the extra steps to serve your guests. Enjoying ones stay at a Marriott property is of course important, but knowing that ones safety is always on the minds of your associates makes it all the easier to select a Marriott over the competition.
My prayers this Sunday morning go out to those associates who lost their lives, to those who continue to serve in Islamabad, and to all the dedicated Marriott associates across the globe. And of course my prayers are with you and the Marriott management team as you continue to build the worlds best hotel brand.... despite this insane world we currently live in.
May God bless you all.

Comment: Mr. Marriott: I am also deeply saddened by this senseless act of cowardice directed towards innocent people and employees of Marriott. I worked for a Marriott company, Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant, from 1977 to 1980. The Marriott "family" always treated us well and with a sense of fairness. I have always respected the Marriott family, its culture and tradition. It is a tragedy that the security employees were killed. It also speaks to their bravery and selfless act of courage knowing they may lose their lives to protect the lives of guests, co-workers and other innocent people. My heart goes out to all of those affected. I continue to hold the Marriott family in the highest regard and will continue to use their hotels whenever the opportunity presents itself. Mr. Marriott, do not waiver, continue your resolve and focus on security. Thank you for your personal post.

I recall so well, the October of 2007 in which I attended by cousin's wedding in the hotel in Islamabad. Fond memories, good hospitality and a great ambiance. This is how I would remember it.

Comment: Frankly, I did not realize this act of terrorism happened to Marriott before I happened to read this blog. My comment is that striking against civilians is always an act of cowardness. Our world has turned into a cold place to live in because of leaders and followers who value power and disregard life itself. I know this may sound old and unfashionable but what the world is lacking today is love, peace and harmony amongst men and women.

Our industry, as honorable and as non-political as it can be, is not immune to terrorist attacks and in theses times, all hoteliers are one family. Our prayers are with you all and we are ready to help in whichever way we can with the victims and families of this horrible incident. I enjoyed few months' business stay in the hotel couple of years back and also liked staying there on private tours. The hospitality and comfort at Marriot has been unmatchable and I hope this incident shall not break their commitment for hospitality and service.

Last year, for about 5 months, I enjoyed your hospitality at a Marriott in a major city in Europe. During that time, it was obvious to me that Marriott took the safety and security of its employees and guests very seriously. There were a number of terrorist alerts during that period but I always felt that Marriott was doing its best to protect us. I have just read this tragic news about the events now unfolding in Islamabad. I am truly devastated by this news. What words can I say that would ever comfort you and all the rest of the Marriott family? As a third party meeting planner, I have come in contact with many Marriott properties throughout the world. I have the utmost respect for everyone within your organization. Please know that you have the thoughts and prayers of all your industry colleagues and friends. In today's world of such aggression and terrorist acts, there is no possible way to insulate ourselves 100%, however many measures we take. You have always gone above and beyond what is expected in terms of security over the years and continue doing so in the name of protecting your customers and employees. As an industry leader, when the world watches everything your company does, I am sure it is a daunting task. Again, my sympathies and my prayers are with you all.

I would like to know what you are doing to support the familes or the Marriot workers that lost their lifes or were injured in Islamabad.
Our (US) relationship with Pakistan is at a critical point - and I imagine the Marriot was targeted for the US Values that it represents. I suggest using this as an opportunity for Marriot to Outreach to the local Islamabad community, and demontrate what US values are truly about.
Specifically, I think you should start a transparent fund for the familes, and offer 2-1 matching on anyone who would donate $ to the fund.
Take care Bill.

Comment: My wife (who is a Marriott associate) and I were saddened today when we heard of the tragedy at the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan. We heard the news while we were with other associates doing service to our community. These deaths were done by a sick group of so called "human beings" who are nothing but cowards. They killed and hurt innocent people hard at work for their own political gain. This type of war on humanity must stop. Marriott has afforded thousands of people around the world the right to enjoy a safe working environment without having to fear this despicable event. As a member of the Marriott Family our condolences go out to all those families who have lost their loved ones and our prayers go out to those who have been injured. Comment: Bill, I share your sadness at this terrible outrage. However, I believe it does a disservice to those killed and injured to refer to mass murder as a 'tragedy'. This word is very passive and gives the impression that this is just an event that happens for no reason, such as an earthquake or a tsunami. What happened in Islamabad was deliberate mass murder, with the intention of destroying as many innocent lives as possible.
I would urge you to use a more accurate heading that reflects the true nature of this horrendous attack.
Best wishes
