Statement Related to Jakarta Explosion

Posted: July 16, 2009 11:18:15 PM

Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of the tragic bombings that took place earlier today in Jakarta, Indonesia. Immediately following the incident, police and hotel security responded and sealed off the area. Our guests at both properties were evacuated and moved to other nearby hotels. Injured guests and hotel employees were taken to the hospital for treatment. Both hotels sustained damage, but it does not appear to be structural. At the time of the incident, extensive security procedures were in place at the Ritz-Carlton and the JW Marriott. We continue to work closely with the authorities and hope to reopen the hotels soon. As always, the safety and security of our guests and associates is our top priority.

For guest information, please contact the Marriott Family Assistance Hotline at 866/211-4610 or 402/390-3265.

Comment: It is indeed sad that terrorism made it's mark again. But hyping up needless security, inconveniencing the traveler and avoiding hotels and living in fear is exactly what terrorism is about. More people die flying commercially than through acts of terrorism, or from natural disasters and traffic accidents. Pse don't give in to terrorism. No amount of open security processes is going to stop this. If we start congesting entrances with security checks, it becomes an ideal congregated target. Stopping cars and checking under the car with a mirror is a gross act of stupidity, when car doors are hollow and ideal for IEDs! Most of the standard security features introduced since 9/11 moot from thinking like victims - and victims we shall be. We need security action that thinks like the perpetrators! From the comments and media reports, it appears we have given in to what the terrorists want, - live in fear of them and find scapegoats to blame. Don't we ever learn. If as mentioned in a comment earlier, that blowing up one's self and others is stupid, then it must be equally if not more stupid to let these stupid people control our lives with fear!

Comment: It's terrible that a couple of mass murderers can not only kill and maim their targets, but make travel a pain for everyone else around the world after that going forward. It makes us think negatively of the whole religion every time we go on a trip.

Comment: My condolences with the victims of the Marriott Bombing in Jakarta. In this time of crisis, I hope that the family members of the victims and those who are injured will find strength to recover and move on in their lives.

Comment: I can't believe that anyone would leave a comment blaming the hotel for this event. If I am inferring correctly from that comment, it is the hotels fault that these people were able to create bombs and kill people? Interesting.. maybe you should be interogated.

Comment: Unfortunately, the only way to improve security to prevent this kind of thing from happening is to incept a system similar to what we now have in airports--shoes off, baggage searched and x-rayed, people and their entire person x-rayed. Imagine having to do that every time you go in and out of a hotel and or one of its restaurants or bars or pools. We simply live in a different world these days that is rife with danger. You take your chances every time you go out.

Comment: My most profound symathies go out to all those affected by this brutal act, it is especially saddening to see Marriott again suffering from this pointless campaign.

Comment: Kasian sekali, how could this guy walked straight to the hotel's restaurant so smoothly, did the management learn anything from 2003? It's unbelievable that this anjing fixed it! I'll hope the hotel staff and the guests who survived the attack are well! And I'll hope Bill Marriot will offer the employees a fat donation, the deserve it! And I'll hope they create a bigger budget to hire more security and detector port to catch those anjings before they attack!

Comment: If anything, I'm more determined than ever to remain a loyal Marriott customer, yes, even in Moslem countries. These Neanderthal terrorists don't deserve my attention and reaction, and I will certainly NOT become a coward due to their pathetic actions. I truly believe God will have a nice surprise for them when they try to enter His Kingdom.

Comment: I cannot understand what goes inside of some people's head to set bombs in hotels, restaurants or any other public place. What is the point of killing people? Why not get an honest job and support a family? Trust me, killing people is not the wish of God.....like many people say these days!!! Be productive, make something useful of your life. Peace!

Comment: I for one will never spend another day or night or even cocktail in a Marriott Hotel anyplace in the world. You must pay attention to what you are doing in Chicago today. You are allowing those to train to do what they did in Jakarta. You have become the ugly American. bye bye

Comment: My sympathies to all that have been injured and their families. As a Platinum Premier I travel world and spend a lot of time in Asia. I am sorry, but the security needs to improve. The half hearted effort by the "Security" staff needs to be addressed. I am finding it harder and harder to have my staff let alone myself stay at your hotels. PLEASE address the seriousness of this matter and hire military style, professionally trained security staff. I know of no business travel who not have a problem paying a security fee if the security staff is profeesionally trained.

Comment: How sad that terrorists choose to inflict damage and death anywhere in the world. My condolences to all who were affected by this terrible act. I hope that the world condemns this act of cowardice, and rejects the ideology that spawns it.

Comment: One more reason to avoid those very expensive hotels and to go to the backpack ones. But for all those people in business trip, it is difficult to avoid those hotels.

Comment: Hi, I'm from Jakarta and I've been watching the news since 8 a.m. this morning (now is 2.31pm). There has been 9 fatalities and 52 confirmed casualties. Our President has released a statement that this terror is likely to *NOT* be linked to the previous bombings. All who wish to follow up the news via twitter can find it via hashtag #jakarta.

Comment: My sincere condolences with all victims of these terrible attacks on your two property's in Jakarta. It's bitter to see this happen, especially as we hospitality people try to give everyone a welcoming smile and a hospitable place - no matter who they are, what religion they have, or how they like their coffee. It's sad. May God, Allah, or whichever Religion they have bless those who survived those attacks and give them strength to heal their wounds. And for the rest of us, we must strive even more to be hospitable and friendly. Those terrorist must not win. Georg
