Marriott Celebrates 20 Years in Eastern Europe

Posted: October 20, 2009 3:52:24 PM

This month we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Warsaw Marriott hotel in Poland. We opened the hotel back in October of 1989, about the time the Iron Curtain was beginning to fall. It was a milestone property for us because it was our 500th hotel worldwide and also the first Western-managed hotel in the city of Warsaw.

Back when it opened, this hotel was very important to the city and to the country. It was actually the only place in Warsaw where people could make international phone calls. It was also important to the associates that worked there. Of the 385 people who serve the hotel today, 100 of them have been there since the day it opened.

To celebrate this milestone, we are kicking off a very special offer for guests traveling to Eastern Europe. From October 30th to March 20, 2010, guests can book rooms in five major cities in Eastern Europe for 20 percent off the regular room rate. These five cities are Berlin, Budapest, Bucharest, Prague and Warsaw.

While it was uncharted territory for us at the time, the opening of the Warsaw Marriott paved the way for our company to continue to explore and expand globally at a more rapid pace. Back then, we had just 500 hotels in 12 countries around the world. Today, we have grown to about 6 times the size with 3,300 hotels in almost 70 different countries.

Congratulations to everyone at the Warsaw Marriott on your 20th anniversary and thank you for all that you do to provide great service to our guests.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Comment: "It was actually the only place in Warsaw where people could make international phone calls." Hmm... I actually lived in Warsaw around that time. Maybe it was the only HOTEL where you could direct dial abroad from the rooms? Anyway, there is only two Marriotts in whole Poland after those 20 years a and both in Warsaw. Can't wait for more openings!

Comment: At age 20, I was considered for a scholarship for study in Poland. Everyone who I spoke to was surprised, I would even consider. The truth is, I myself was unaware of what socio-economic, political implications meant and could have been. My understanding then was education and government is usually separated. However, now based on your offer Mr. Marriott, I have the opportunity to enjoy the Hospitality of MARRIOTT in Warsaw before it reaches it's 21st year, as well as in some other Eastern major European cities. I say thanks for the invitation and the opportunity you take in sharing, as MARRIOTT keeps on the move.
