There's been a lot of talk and coverage recently about a fellow CEO online who was posting some not-so-nice stuff about his competition. It seems that today, the business world is becoming much more transparent, thanks in large part to the Internet.
All this got me thinking, "Why do I blog?" Well, I've been doing it now for six months and I've found it's a great learning experience and I've had a lot of fun doing it. I'm sure you probably have learned a lot about me. I do value family, work and community, and I'm not afraid to tackle controversial topics such as reforming our immigration policy or putting our non-smoking policy in our hotels in the United States and Canada. I like to talk about good news, but I'm not afraid to talk about the bad news, such as my blog about the bombing of our Islamabad hotel.
Businesses must have values and I've tried to communicate some of ours in my blog. We certainly do have a growing commitment to saving the environment. Many of you offered praise in your comments; others want us to do even more.
Sometimes I've asked others to communicate the company's values on the blog. It was wonderful to read the comments about Valerie McSwain. She's the concierge at the Washington, D.C. Marriott who was supporting her family on welfare before she got an opportunity with us. She's a superstar. Education and diversity are also very important values for our company.
When your family's name is on the building or you are the person clearly identified with the company, everything you say or do affects the business, good or bad. In this fascinating information age, you certainly have to be transparent.
I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Thanks.. as they say there is nothing like a Marriott bed.. and I have slept soundly in mnay of them..
Thanks

Dear Mr Marriott,
I have a timeshare business and I travel several times a month all across the U.S. I wanted to take some time and tell you that I love staying in your hotels. I stay every time I can because of the customer service you provide. I give credit where credit is do, so I thought I would make this post. Thanks for everything!

My husband recently went to work for a new Fairfield Inn to open next week. I found your website to be very interesting and am so impressed with your blogs, regarding all sort of things. I agree that associates make the Marriott stay a great one. It appears that your Dad was a very intelligent, caring, and wonderful business man which is the reason that Marriott grew to be such a great place to stay. We need more of you and his kind in this world today. Its a small world, because my first summer job was at A & W Root Beer in 1961. Continue with the great blogs and I look forward to being in the Marriott family.

Mr. Marriott, yes, this blog has been quite an education - for me as well. I was intially hesistant to read the blog, for fear of another corporate rant. I should have known better of you. These items are frank, honest, and positive. I may not always agree with some parts of them. Funny thing, I am more concerned about the tone of some responses.
This is my take on Marriott: 20 years ago, I started travelling for business. I am no morning person, yet Marriott employees were sparkling at 7am and the rest of the day. I can tell when I am at another hotel company. But the funny thing, I find myself falling short of the sparkling at 7am part. Now that I manage a business operation, I have had a customer issues and complaints. Funny thing, I asked myself how would Marriott people handle this. I listened, noted they were correct to be disappointed, and quickly corrected the problem with a refund. My customer said he was surprised, thinking we would give a partial credit. He left happy, came back a few months later wanting more of my group's services for his employees. He noted our services may not be right for him, but a good fit for his employees. A short loss, but a long term win.
It's just plain common sense. Just common sense is not always common practice. Thank you, Mr. Marriott for sharing your common sense.

Congrats! Mr. Mariott to you and the Marriott family on your 80th year of business and service. I am a University of Delaware student who will be meeting with Marriott Headquarters in DC/MD on 9/12/07 to discuss how emerging technologies may resolve, enhance, improve, and . I have read the To Our Shareholders and Risk Factors sections of your Marriott 2006 Annual Report among other sections. I call your attention to the major issues which Marriott gives voice. Namely, the protection of children from sexual exploitation, human rights, business ethics, and visa and immigration reform which were addressed at the World Travel and Tourism Conference. Taking into account that these issues still remain to be challenges to the global hospitality industry, how has technology failed and/or been successful at addressing these challenges specific to the Marriott enterprise? ...And you, Mr. Marriott being the visionary and strategic leadership of the Marriott brands, what technologies have you been introduced to and supportive of in your quest to further innovate the Marriott enterprise into the 21st century? To quote Mr. J.W. Marriott Sr., Success is never final.

Mr Marriott:
Its a pleasure being able to communicate with you via this medium.
I own a business that caters to a lot of hard -working immigrants in Maryland and would like to urge you and gov O'Malley to help prevent the harrassment and detention of some of these immigrants by enemies of progress who fail to see how our being the richest state in the union has alot to do with the influx of these immigrants to Maryland. Please, help these folks legalize and stay in our state so we can remain in the number one spot.If you need me to speak publicly at an hotel rally,I'll be available.
God Bless You and Yours,

Dear Mr Marroitt, I wanted to tell how wonderful your hotels are, i stay there all the time when I am on business and everybody on your staff treats me like gold everytime without fail. MR.******* at the San Jose Marroitt was so nice that he gave me an upgrade when a cetain room wasnt available....thanks. also i'd like to tell you about my business, I work with an Artist by the name of Jon Mcnaughton, McNaughton is an established artist from Utah whose paintings are attracting the attention of collectors from across the country. McNaughton describes his work as the essence of nature. After spending many hours observing and studying the varying nuances of the landscape, he will return to his studio and paint from memory. Refusing to work from photographs, mental notations and an occasional pencil sketch are enough to inspire a beautiful painting. McNaughton has specific goals for what he hopes to accomplish in the future. It is my hope that my paintings will reach the viewer on more than a superficial level to touch something inside them which may not easily be reached. I hope the paintings will speak to them and say something like, youve seen me before and yet you have never seen anything completely like me. When they walk away, I want to leave a feeling with them they will never forget because what they have seen has become a part of them. To vist our website please visit: www.mcnaughtonart.com. thanks

Mr. M
having missed every opportunity to meet you in person I've never had the opportunity to say thanks for a couple of opportunities to work on a couple of your cars which fed my kids and I in addition to allowing me to keep my hands in one of my passions...ferraris.
I have worked with some of the various folks who have restored some of your cars and have now turned my passion for all things mechanical into my full time job.
I started fairwindz to help non custodial parents and their kids. There is great satisfaction in seeing a kids face after a ride on a Ducati or in a porsche 930.
The devastation left in the wake of a divorce and custody battle leaves everyone involved financially ruined.
Through generous donations in the boating , automotive , motorcycle and rv world along with countless others we can make the 96 hours per month that kids are given with a respective parent amazing and memorable.
I hope you'll take a quick look through our site and possibly find a way to share your passion for the best with some kids who through interaction with it will take a direction in life which transcends the misfortune they have been saddled with by no fault of their own.
The opportunity to work on some of your collection has truly been a blessing for me.
Thanks in advance for your consideration
Tom and the whole gang at Fairwindz

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I wanted to communicate with you about one of your employees. Mr. Robin *******, Director of Sales at the Fairway Villas at Seaview, has been a wonderful representative for your corporation.
Several years ago, Mr. ******* assured us that the quality of the Vacation Resorts was of the highest caliber. Over time, we purchased 4 time share weeks at the Fairway Villas. Ever since then, we have been extremely pleased with the quality of the resorts that we have stayed in throughout the United States and overseas.
Mr. ******* was true to his word. This, unto itself, is noteworthy to report to you. However, even after the sales were made, Mr. ******* has made himself available to assist us when issues have arisen.
Most recently, we spent two weeks in Colorado. We were not satisfied with the quality of one of the hotels that we were booked into for our vacation. We just happened to be staying at the Fairway Villas several weeks later. We arrange a time to talk with Mr. ******* about this experience. Within a week, he had arranged a satisfactory resolution for us.
Mr. Marriott, I am a retired CEO of a small organization that employed approximately 1,000 employees. I was always looking for supervisors who could fairly represent my organization and resolve consumer issues in a mutually satisfactory manner. I have found that Mr. ******* not only sold us an excellent product but was there to stand behind the quality of the organization.
Such employees are jewels within an organization. This one truly sparkles.
Sincerely,
Dave Burpee

Mr. Marriott,
My opinion of a true leader is one that keeps his office door open and has transparency in his organization. The blog you write is one way of doing that. Your blog is one of several that I read during the week - and it is one of the ones that shows the true diversity in leadership that you provide your organization. I like understanding what is on your mind as it helps me understand what the true leaders in our country are thinking. No offense, but it is great to see leaders with your seniority reaching out thru new formats / venues to not only your employees, but also to your customers and followers. Truly shows your adaptability...Keep it up! Beth Stallings

Mr. Bill Marriott,
I was wondering if you would comment on what marriott, inc. is doing for our men and women in uniform, veterans and their families, such as meaningful military discounts, resort specials, etc or any initiatives that are in planning? I look forward to your thoughts. Marriott, Inc. has become a hugely respected American corporation. many thanks, mike

Dear Mr. Marriott, This past weekend my wife and I had the opportunity to stay at your Courtyard by Marriott, Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee. The employees working your front desk are without questions some of the most professional, dedicated, caring individuals we have experienced in all our many years of travel. We were attending our son's Naval Boot Camp Graduation and everyone that we came in contact with at this location was most accommodating and thoughtful. Ms. Tracy Ratliff started off by graciously helping us with our check in and offering directions. Ms Ashlee ******, Ms. Angela ******* and Ms. Valarie ******* came to our aid with suggestions on shipping a box, directions to the airport, recommendations on things to do and helping us with our bill. I would like to personally thank Ms. ******* for hand carrying our box to the Post Office this past Monday, far beyond the call of duty! Because of these fine people, I will pass along this experience onto my son's recruiter here in Phoenix, AZ and tell him that any family planning on attending their child's graduation ceremony MUST stay at the Courtyard by Marriott, Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee. I'll also tell family, friends and clients who may be planning on visiting the Chicago area that they should strongly consider staying at this location. Please take a moment and send these employee's a heart felt thank you on our behalf -. They most definitely deserve it. Many thanks, Bill & Jackie Adams

Bill,
I hope I can call you that. I am a Lifetime Platinum Member(149023160). I have been staying at your outstanding properties since 1988. Other business associates over the years have tried to sway me to other properties, which honestly,I did try. However in the last 20 years that I have been with Marriott I have convinced all these other people and my customers to see the value with Marriott and they have all changed allegiance. At every chance I get I push the benefits of Marriott because of the service you and your employees have given me.I'm proud and extremely happy to be part of your program for the last 20 years!

Dear Mr. Marriott,
My husband and I travel about 6 to 7 times a year and happily only stay at Marriott Hotels. We are proud Reward members as well. We might be in the minority of people who would like to have the adult choice of staying at a hotel and being able to have an area in the hotel, lounge, or restaurants, to have a cigar/cigarette with our cocktails. Will you ever consider having a smoking area in your hotels again?
Posted by: Anne | 08/21/2007 at 08:29 AM
I stay at your Marriott hotels everytime I get a chance--business or pleasure. I am a Rewards member and agree that some special discount or consideration should be given to Rewards customers.
Posted by: Joyce Townsend | 08/21/2007 at 05:23 AM
Dear Mr. Marriott: There are many military retirees that have used your hotels in the past and enjoyed them. Now you have put them out of our reach--why?

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I can't tell you in words how much my husband and I love staying at your hotels! We noticed lately the prices have been going up really high, like the Marriott Eastside in NYC - 2 years ago we stayed there for only $199 a night, now the lowest we've seen it is in the mid $400! What's the deal? Speaking of deals, it would be great if you offered a discount on all your properties (not just select properties) for Reward members. Thanks for listening, take care...

I am a silver rewards member and concur with others who will not stay at a franchise. I've had a horrible experience in Oregon and it has definitely caused me to consider only the corporate owned Marriotts.

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I was reading your comment that you have a growing committment to saving the environment. My husband and I are Marriott vacation club owners. It is concerning to me that none of the vacation clubs I have stayed in (we trade to a new location each year) have recycling programs. There are so many bottles, cans, and other recyclable materials used by guests at the vacation clubs. Can you please add recycle bins/programs to these properties?
Thank you,

FYI... I've never had an issue connecting to your website to book online reservations until today. It is extremely slow and I've actually received error messages causing me to try again. Perhaps this is just an issue with your server today, however, it definitely needs to be resolved quickly. BTW, LOVE THIS BLOG!! Nice touch. Cheers!

dear mr marriott, why aren't all of your properties' natural stone floors properly maintained? most of your properties display magnificent flooring, but the maintenance varies. i think that one company should maintain all of your properties thus creating uniformity. i know this because i've restored natural stone on a number of them!!

Dear Mr. Marriott,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts on this blog page. My husband has been a Platium member for years and overall we love staying at your hotels. However, as one other poster stated, there is a problem with quality control at the hotels that are not cooperate owned. We have had some horrible experiences in those hotels. BTW--our favorite Marriott's are the Vienna (Ringstrassr) and the JW Mexico City. Our least favorite is the Coronado, Ca. Marriott---just awful!!
Thank you

Mr. Marriott, I certainly enjoy staying in your hotels every time I travel, I wanted to bring something to your attention. I have been trying for 3 hours to get connected to your website to make a reservation, only to have your links in your web pages not work. I have tried calling local Marriott's to get a corporate number to make a reservation the old fashioned way and still no luck. I do not want to go any where other than one of your hotels but these issues may force me to do that on this trip.

With all due respect Mr Marriott, your main website, www.marriott.com, is habitualy slow. It's difficult to spend an inordinate amount of time waitng for the home page to download. I have a DSL line coming into my house and any other site open insatantly.
Thank you, Luke
