Making Dreams Come True

June 10, 2008

Santa-captioned I want to tell you what I learned when I visited our Salt Lake City Downtown Marriott Hotel.  You know, I just love to hear stories like this.

Back in March, Pamela Daley took her four year old daughter Sahara to Salt Lake City, Utah, for tests at Primary Children's Hospital.  They stayed in our Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown Hotel.  To get Sahara excited about the trip, Pamela told her daughter she'd get to see some real snow in Salt Lake City.  Since she was from warm, sunny Arizona, Sahara was thrilled she was going to see snow and immediately thought about Santa Claus.

However, when they arrived in Salt Lake City, they had been having an exceptionally warm week and all the snow had gone.  Sahara still believed she was going to get to see Santa and spent all of her free time writing him letters.  When she showed Henry Richards, an associate at our hotel, her letters, he was very touched.  He decided he had to do something to make this trip a little more memorable for Sahara than just a bunch of tests at the hospital.

Henry's friend, Steve Chaffin, worked as Santa during the holiday season, so Henry gave him a call.  Steve immediately agreed to help, and Henry went and bought a few books and toys and wrapped them for Sahara.  That evening, they set up an unused suite at the hotel and they brought in Sahara and her mother for their special meeting with Santa.

While Sahara was having a wonderful time visiting with Santa and opening her presents, her mother told Henry that Sahara had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy earlier that day.  Although the day brought bad news for the family, this small act of kindness by Henry and his friend brought joy as well.  I'm so proud of Henry, Steve and all the associates at the Salt Lake City Downtown Marriott for making this little girl's otherwise difficult trip so special.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

What a wonderful heart warminng story. I love to hear stories like this one. I wish Sahara the best.

I saw your interview on MSNBC. I loved the fact how you explained your business in terms of REVPAR. I love it when the top commander is in touch with his/her business at the operation level. Good luck with your 30,000 rooms. That's really impressive. By the way I am also impressed that you have a blog. This is just great. I would love to invite to come and visit us in Jordan. You should have no problem with accommodation given that you already have an impressive footprint around here:-)

Wow, what a moving story. This is why Marriott is just a great company...because of its people.
