I'm blogging today from the newly renovated BWI Courtyard near Baltimore Washington International Airport in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the latest Courtyard hotel to feature the brand's brand new lobby concept and design. The new lobby is already in place at a few Courtyard hotels, including the Fair Oaks Courtyard, which is right down the road in Fairfax, Virginia.
I had a great tour today. As I walked in, the first thing I saw was the GoBoard telling me all about the exciting things to see in the Baltimore area - the zoo, the various restaurants available, the aquarium. I noticed that there were a lot of people working on their computers and hooked up to the WiFi, which is free.
But the most impressive thing when you walk into our lobby is the terrific display of food and beverage offerings. There are a lot of colorful drinks, snacks and a lot of great bakery items. In the morning we serve breakfast and in the evening we serve hot dinner. There's a circular area in the middle of the lobby that has bar seats, coffee and additional food and beverage offerings right in the middle of the lobby, which I think is terrific.
The podiums when you walk in welcome you for check-in. They're easily available, people can walk from behind the podiums to greet you and you really feel that you're part of the hotel. The Market, which is 24 hours, on the left side of the front desk is very bright and inviting and a great place to grab a snack on the way to the airport. And since we're an airport hotel, we have a boarding pass print-out station, which is very active and very well done.
We hope to have about 30 Courtyards, including new builds and renovations, with the new lobby by the end of this year and we're looking at nearly 200 more by the end of next year.
We've always been interested in what our guests have to say and what they look for in a hotel, and I think we've hit the nail on the head this time. Our guests seem to love it.
In case you haven't seen it yet, you can take a look at the new lobby and read the blog by Courtyard's vice president of brand management, Brian King, at our website www.gocourtyard.com. And, as always, please feel free to leave a comment for me or for Brian and let us know what you think.
I'm Bill Marriott, and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.
Wowed by Courtyards Extreme Lobby Makeover

When I travel my first choice is always Courtyard. I know what I'll be getting and I have not been disappointed.
This comment is about the new Courtyard jingle. I was checking stocks on my computer with my back to the tv, heard the sound and knew it was a Courtyard commercial on cnbc. Good job!

I stayed at the Courtyard in Sherman Oaks about four months ago and simply loved it. I was there for business and thus I used a large meeting room and had breakfast catered for over 300. The continental breakfast was fabulous, the staff was great...and I loved the lobby. should I have the occasion, I'll stay there again. Thank you.

Marriott hotels usually have 5 sports channels. Please add channels like HGTV, Lifetime or other channels that appeal more to female travelers. I recently stayed at a Courtyard in Milwaukee which did not even have the FoxNews Channel. The renovations to the hotels are great - but can you add more TV channels. Please.

I never got to the point, like poster Joshua Katt, that I swore off Courtyards forever, but I join him in his puzzlement that Courtyards don't provide Gold and Platinum Elite members a complimentary breakfast, when many other Mariott brands, from Fairfield Inn to JW Mariott (in the concierge lounge) do. The availability of breakfast always figures in the equation whether I stay at a Courtyard vs. another Marriott brand. In fact, it's a subset of what I call the Inverse Marriott Rule: The pricier the brand, the more likely you are to have to pay for extras (as when some Concierge Lounges close on the weekends), and the more likely some things are going to strike you as weird (my favorite example: the ceramic, and therefore breakable, shampoo bottles in the JW Marriott Resort in Phuket, Thailand). For a long time, I'd be more likely to get free wireless (or wired) internet at the cheaper brands -- thank goodness that now seems to be changing. Anyway, yeah, let's fix that Courtyard breakfast glitch, shall we? And congrats on the new Courtyard look; it's very homey but thoroughly modern -- nice job!

Hi Mr. Marriott,
I love your Courtyards in Europe (most recently Berlin and Plzen, Czech Republic). The design at BWI looks like your European hotels and I can't wait to stay there. As an avid Marriott fan and multiple Vacationclub owner, I appreciate everything Marriott does to maintain its properties and keep the designs updated. The staff is also the best in the business!

I see many improvements to your hotels. I stay in your hotels 3-5 nights a month all over the US. I have had various problems with internet access this past month at all 4 of the marriott courtyards I have stayed at. I wish you had a better internet provider. Golden Tree does a really bad job. Its frustrating when I need to get on the internet for work and cannot depend on Marriott to provide me with internet access.

I stayed at the BWI Courtyard about a month ago when it was still under renovation. The staff could not have been more gracious and efficient. I would like to see the property now that renovations have been completed as it looks quite nice.

I had the pleasure of staying at one of your newer Courtyards at San Diego Liberty Station this last Monday. One of the most memorable experiences from this stay was the pride that many of the Courtyard staff showed on their faces with their welcoming smiles. Johnnie I think it was at the lobby bar, greeted me and served a great (late) dinner for me while watching the US Olympic team win some more medals, on some of your new LG Flat Screens. Seeing your evolution of your Courtyards is a great thing. My wife and I had an opportunity to stay in your Rome Airport Courtyard, and I've stayed in places from Bochum Germany to Sherman Oaks, CA, for my Business this year. My little company will be planning some events in Bellevue, WA and at your Sherman Oaks location in the next few months. Thank you for all your are doing to make the Courtyards a great place to do business, while also staying in touch with all parts of our lives while on the road!

I work for ACICS (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools), an arm of the Department of Education, and we always stay at a Marriott--Marquis, Courtyard, motel--and I have never been disappointed. The accommodations are usually perfect, and if they are not, my request for another room is quickly acted upon.
My husband joined me on one of my business trips to Miami, Florida, a few years ago, and we stayed at the JW Marriott, which was beautiful. He still talks about it.
Marriott is my hotel/motel of choice even when I am not on a business trip (please don't mention this to my son-in-law who works for the Hilton Hotel chain).
Mr. Marriott, I have heard from an ACICS colleague that you are a very gracious and generous gentleman. That is very gratifying to learn. Keep up the good work.

I can't wait to see one of the new Courtyard lobbies. From the photos and videos it seems like Marriott is really offering an inviting and functional space for travelers. It would be even more exciting to be at a hotel and see Mr. Marriott!

Looks great! I trust that tired, old Courtyard guest rooms with the tiny TV on the side dresser has been given a makeover too? This might convince me to return after swearing off Courtyards forever. Perhaps by providing complementary breakfast to Gold and Platinum elites, your most loyal customers might be enticed to return? After all just another $10 per night will usually get me into a Full Service Marriott complete with concierge Lounge. Consider it.

I love the new design -- can't wait to stay in one of these fancy places! Please keep us posted on your blog (or at least on the brand-specific blog) as the new lobby spreads across the rest of the Courtyards in the coming months.
