Business Week Names Marriott One of the 100 Best Places to Launch a Career

September 30, 2008

BestPlacesLg Business Week magazine recently named Marriott one of the 100 Best Places to Launch a Career.  With lots of exciting companies on the list, like Google, we're excited that Marriott was ranked sixth.  We have exciting brands and a huge range of jobs from finance to hotel operations to marketing, hotel development and systems.  But, bottom line, we offer opportunities to learn and to grow.

In fact, many of our top executives started working for Marriott right out of college, or even earlier.  Bob McCarthy started working for the company as a server at the Phineas Prime Rib restaurant, which was one of our Marriott restaurants while he was still in college near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1975.  Today, he's president of North American lodging operations and oversees the operations of about 2,500 hotels.

Another great success story is Nawfal Bendefa, who started out as a front desk associate at the Orlando Marriott World Center in Orlando, Florida, to make some extra money while he was in college.  He decided to stay with the company after he graduated and today, he works in London and is a vice president of international hotel development.  When he came into his current role two years ago, he was the youngest person in the company to ever be named a vice president.

As many of you know, I was born and raised in this company so I started working for Marriott at a very young age.  My very first paying job was stapling different invoices together at the accounting department of our old office on Upshur Street in Washington, D.C.  My kids and many of my grandchildren started working for the company early on, too.  I believe that getting a part-time job in high school or college is a great way to start taking on responsibility.

And for those with an interest in hospitality, a job with Marriott is a great way to learn about the industry, develop great customer service skills and acquire the experience to become one of our company's future leaders.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Mr, Marriott, I started a career with Marriott in 1982in Charleston S.C. as a banquet Houseman. I Left the Company in 1997 as a General Manager in Marriott Corporate services Division. Long story short..I was able to take a great deal of knowledge and management skills and start my own business. Today I am worth 2.5 Million. Not so bad for a poor boy from a small town in South Carolina I am living out my dreams. Thanks for allowing someone with no education or experience a chance to succeed. Marriott has created opportunity for many people over the years. I was lucky enough to be one of them,. Thanks

Congratulations on such a great achievement.
