Islamabad Marriott Hotel Reopens

December 29, 2008

Islamabad Marriott Hotel Reopening It's been a short three months since terrorists struck our Marriott hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan.  It was a terrible loss for the owner of the hotel, Sadruddin Hashwani.  Many associates and guests were killed and the building was destroyed by fire.  But Mr. Hashwani was determined from that first night to rebuild the hotel, and I'm proud to tell you that yesterday, the hotel began to reopen.  What a triumph of the spirit.

I would like to congratulate and commend Mr. Hashwani, his family and all of our wonderful associates for their hard work and dedication rebuilding and reopening this wonderful hotel in record time.  It shows their resolve to keep the doors of commerce and communication open by creating an environment where people from a multitude of different cultures can meet, socialize and do business together.  It also demonstrates Marriott's commitment to promote global diplomacy by expanding our footprint as we continue to build and open hotels around the world.

I send my deepest condolences to the families of those who were killed in the attack, as well as to those who were injured.  They will never be forgotten and their memory will live on in the newly rebuilt Islamabad Marriott.

Again, I congratulate the entire team in Islamabad on their reopening just in time for the New Year.  Their perseverance proves that by banding together to achieve a common goal, even the most difficult of circumstances can be overcome.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

After the recovery of Marriott hotel blast, the real estate market not only in islamabad, but also all over the country is emerging day by day. Marriott hotel is back bone for over seas investment in Real Estate For pakistan. Thanks Mr. Marriott.

Marriott hotel blast had put extremely negative effects on Pakistan real estate industry but thank God it is now on its way to recovery and now Pakistan Property business is in much more better situation than it was after the incident.

How can you people ask for discounts where someone is speaking of the deaths of so many. My God have you no feelings. Nothing in life is free. If prices go up in stores or hotels, it is because their suppliers prices went up. If you don't want to spend too much don't travel as much. God Bless

Mr. Marriott, So many times in my life I have wanted to write to people whom I feel display true excellence in the way they live their lives and the benefits they bring to others - people like Walt Disney, Carl Sagan, Dag Hammarskold, Bing Crosby... I believe you and your family are in this category. It so saddens me when something happens to one of your hotels. My husband and I have been patrons of Marriott for over 30 years now, not only because of excellence in your individual properties and your organization in general, but because of your staff. Your staff members clearly come from all walks of life, all religions and all cultures. I have never known another organization that is as truly multinational as Marriott - you are the one organization that NO ONE should attack, because you care for everyone regardless of their nationalities. I cannot begin to tell you how much respect I have for you personally and for your organization and I would implore those who would ever wish to do you harm to consider the benefits you have provided for people all over the world to come together and the 'home' you have provided for your employees, many of whom stay with you for so many years. I hope your company will continue to operate with such strong business ethics - that is precisely what keeps my family coming back to Marriott over and over. Thank you for your excellence and we will pray for the health and safety of your employees and guests all over the world.

I have read your blog with much interest and have even read parts of your book. I am developing a programme for directors of Financial Institutions in Malaysia in the area of Corporate Governance and would like to invite you to come and address our directors. Please let me know how i can contact you so that we could talk further on this. Your vast experience would be a real good learning experience for us all.

Mr. Marriott
My hearty congratulations on making a major step by reopening the Islamabad hotel and thereby thwarting the terrorists who did the cowardly act such a short time ago. When I was, as a government employee, working in counter terrorism we knew that the primary motivation for any terrorist act was to call attention to a cause, person, or perceived injustice while inflicting maximum damage, mostly to innocent civilians who were just there, unfortunately. By reopening this hotel you have deprived these terrorist cowards of their propaganda victory and shown that the Marriott family of associates can weather these incidents and rebound quickly.

I enjoy being a Marriott Rewards member. However, I need some help. With the economy in a bit of a down slide, 2008 was not a fruitful as hoped. That beig send, I was unable to travel as much with budget constraints. I missed qualifying for my Gold Status for 2009 by a couple of nights. Could you please make a exception and have me marked as such? My Rewards number is ********* - Michael R. Posk. I do have a choice in where I stay ans would like to continue with the Marriott properties. If this status changes, I will have to re-evaluate my loyalty for the future. I look forward to your response.

My son-in-law is a retired veteran in the U.S. Marine Corp. He is retired because he has medical problems aquired during his active duty serving our country. He must travel to Mayo Clinic for medical treatment and we have not been able to find hotels that give special rates to non-active veterans. Is there a reason why your policy is to give special rates to active duty veterans only. Seems like our wounded vets deserve consideration for medical treatment related stays.

Hare Krishna and A Happy New Year!
Dear Mr.Marriott and The Marriott Group:
I hope you all are doing well and endeavoring to prosper in the New Year! This letter is being sent to you, Mr. Marriott, to inform you of my own personal successes in life due to inspiration derived from YOU. Whenever I had to go through challenges of dealing with people, by remembering your own difficult times and how you dealt with them, I was very inspired and enthused to keep moving forward towards my own goals and achieving them with satisfaction in knowing the knowledge you provided has helped me to become successful.
Currently, I work at a flooring company and participate in my temple congregation's committee having taken the responsible role of public relations for our congregation. Based on your teachings, " If you take care of your employees, the employees will take care of your guests "...it is so TRUE and I have personal experience of this in my own life. I consider that our material life ( work place, diversity, attitude, etc) and our devotional life goes on the same track.
Also, I am serving at our Baltimore ISKCON Temple in Catonsville, MD. The Service, I perform is based on your teachings, and I/we have established many devoted followers and look forward for more persons to join our yearly Festival of India at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. I LOVE doing this service of making devotees/guests, feel as if it is their home/temple.
I THANK YOU for the pure teachings, and look froward to serving you. At our temple, we will always pray for Mr.Marriott and the entire Marriott Group to always be successful in your endeavors.

I just spent ten days at the other Marriott in Pakistan, the Karachi Marriott, also owned by Mr. Hashwani. My friends advised me against staying at a Marriott in Pakistan because of the terrorist attack on Marriott in Islamabad. They thought that that the Karachi Marriott may be next.
Off course I did not listen to anyone. My rule is, if there is a hotel with a Marriott sign I will not stay anywhere else. The Karachi Marriott is vey safe and secure. It was a good decision because I received excellent service from Mr. Ather ******, the General Manager , who had bent over backwards to take care of my needs. He made me feel very important. Mr. ****** gave me his business card with his cell number encouraging me to call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The turn down service and the breakfast service, in the executive lounge, from Mr. ****** is particularly noteworthy. He has to be the one of the best general managers in the System compares with Christopher *********, GM for JW Marriott in Cancun, and Hank ****** when he ran Marriott Moscone in San Francisco in the early nineties. I have met and have had great service from many Marriott managers and have been happy to share my constructive critique with many of the General Managers.

Dear Mr Marriott,
My name is Robert Smith President of Smith Innovations Inc. I am the manufacturer of The VIP Odorless Toilet. Not long ago on a business trip I stayed at the Courtyard on the upper east side. I very much enjoyed my stay, the staff was friendly, the accommodation's great, and I felt well rested. As a young man I have been in most of your hotels throughout the city. My grandfather Samuel Smith was vice president of Home Lines Cruises in Manhattan where he also lived, his office was in the trade towers. He always had business guests and our extended family stay at the Marriott where we often meet for dinner. Those fond memories are with me today and compels me to approach your company.
Respectfully, there is one thing that will improve the accommodation's immediately. The room I stayed in had no bathroom ventilation and the bathroom door is right off the bedroom. I would assume that most, if not all the rooms are arranged the same. As a former N.Y. contractor I understand having those bathrooms ventilated would be a great cost and time. The VIP odorless toilet would correct that problem immediately and be a great addition to the standard of quality your hotels already provide. The VIP installs the same as most toilets with no construction, filters or cartridges to change. This is a fresh new design that is long overdue, we feel this product will set a new standard. The VIP operates effectively by removing all contaminated air from under the user and redirects it into the sewer vent at base of the toilet never allowing any of that air to roam the bathroom. The VIP is certified from IAPMO R&T Labs and is also ADA compliant. This toilet is a water saver and is cast in one piece with the odor removal system integrated in the porcelain so not to detract from the beauty of this designer toilet. I'm sure we have the same philosophy when it comes to customers, a happy customer will come back and spread the word of enjoyment.
We have these toilets in service for several years. They perform excellent and our customers are completely satisfied. Once a person uses The VIP Odorless Toilet all other toilets seem inferior. The benefits are plentiful, not only are there no odors in the bathroom anymore but, there is no need for cover up sprays or noisy fans. While the odors are being removed the germs and bacteria that may be associated with odors will also be eliminated. There are many reasons to have our product. This idea puts the customer first and treats them like royalty. It is hard to enjoy the fine decor while the room is full of odor. When we launched our product this year we enjoyed watching news of The VIP Odorless Toilet spread across 150+ news media outlets including CNN and other top new agencies. It would be a honor to see a national news headline reading
" Marriott Hotels Upgrading To The Most Modern Bathrooms In The World ".
We have a saying "Members Of This VIP Club Remain Anonymous"
I look forward to speaking with someone regarding this one of a kind product. Additional information can bee seen at www.odorlesstoilets.com.
Best Regards
Robert Smith

Great post. Wish you all the best and hope this won't happen again ever. The hotel will return the client soon, but the story will last forever.

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I wish they will realize the peace they are seeking. Many a times when I walk into the hotel I work in I never cease to amaze at the amount of diverse nationalities I come into contact with per shift. I work in a deluxe five star European hotel chain. On the telephone when I greet the hotel guests with good morning, I immediately come into contact and feel the bright human spirits that answer me back and ask me for the hotel services. We are all human beings that unite for different purposes under one hospitality ceiling. Again my deepest prayers and wishes that peace will be felt by all war struck countries and may our kind Lord bless all the hospitality workers that have the courage to walk up to their jobs daily and serve in this much admired profession.
