A Unique Residence Inn Serving the Needs of the Mayo Clinic

March 24, 2009
Phxmh_phototour01 It's the end of March, so that means I'm taking my annual trip to Scottsdale, Arizona.  I've come out here for spring break to our JW Marriott Camelback Inn every year for 41 years to celebrate my birthday and spend time with my family.  It's always great to have everybody together, particularly in one place - especially a place with such beautiful weather and scenery.

But, like I do on most of my trips, I will be visiting some of our Marriott properties while I'm in the area.  I'll even be attending the grand opening ceremony for our newest Residence Inn in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area.  This is a very unique hotel as it actually sits on the campus of the Mayo Clinic hospital and caters to patients and their families, as well as researchers and other medical professionals who are visiting the hospital.

Our Residence Inn brand is perfect for many patients of the Mayo Clinic and their families as these hotels are designed for guests who plan to stay with us for an extended period of time.  Of course, every room is a suite - we offer studios and 1 and 2 bedroom suites - so there's plenty of space to spread out.  Each one has separate living and dining areas with a full kitchen.  Residence Inn also offers all guests a complimentary grocery shopping service, or for those who don't want to do their own cooking, there is a full complimentary breakfast every morning.

And this particular hotel actually has a separate lounge on each floor to meet the different needs of our guests.  For example, on one floor there is a media lounge with a computer, TV and DVDs available to rent at the front desk.  On another floor, there's a family lounge that offers puzzles and board games.  And there's, of course, a quiet lounge where guests can just relax or catch up on some reading.

I'm excited to visit this hotel as the Mayo Clinic holds a very special place in my heart.  In 1962, our daughter Debbie, at the age of 5, was one of the very first patients in America to undergo open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  Debbie survived this operation and is now a senior officer in our company, in charge of all relationships with the government and government affairs.  She has five children and a grandchild.  Her heart condition has been totally solved and she's a joy to our lives, thanks to the Mayo Clinic.

The Mayo Clinic provides world class care and service to all of its patients and I'm thrilled that we now have a Residence Inn hotel right on the campus that will provide these patients with the same level of care and service outside of the hospital.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

I am impressed with your thoughtfulness in identifying the needs people have that require hotel stays. Do you offer special needs facilities in other states for other than health care? My husband, son and I are about to travel to Maryland to adopt an infant girl. We are faced with staying in a hotel for at least a week up to possibly a month, depending on how long it takes the lawyers to file the paperwork to allow us to leave the state.

Mr. Marriott, I always enjoy reading your blog. It is because of the issues you raise and your obvious deep sense of responsibility. Having stayed at a Residence Inn for the first time just before Christmas, I immediately realized how well it fits the purpose you describe. It is great to here that you are also personally involved in trying to provide affordable health care to those in need. Best wishes for your success!

Respected Mr. Marriott, God has given you a sence of understanding and act to right which few human beings have, but more than that is a lovely heart for Cherity. May god give you a longer life to serve the society.

I'm thoroughly impressed with the Del Monte Spa in Pittsford, NY. I live outside of Buffalo and would love to have one of your hotel/spas on our waterfront. Have you considered it?

My family took advantage of the Marriott that serves the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida recently when my father had surgery to remove cancer. The Mayo Clinic not only successfully removed the cancer but provided a level of care my family will never forget. The convenience of the Marriott hotel and the service provided went hand-in-hand with the Mayo's reputation and gave my family further comfort during a difficult time. We appreciated both more than we can express.

Congratulations on the opening of your new hotel connected to the Mayo in Arizona! We too had a daughter at age 5 have a surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN., for cateract removal in hopes of saving her sight. Today she is in high school and a member of the National Honor Society with limited vision. We know the importance of having a nice place to stay while the family processes the emotions of a sick beloved family member. Marriott has done it again! Thank-you and congratulations! I am also in the hospitality industry. I am the manager of a 27 room Inn in a resort area. In 2011 as our youngest child goes off to college I will seek a Marriott career. I am impressed with the family legacy and the operations of the Marriott!

kindly note that the demonstration of your new opening hotel (residence inn)is new standards of hotels industry as classification (treatment hotels)this classification was mentioned in 1990while french author(edmond jabus)(le livre de hospitalite)in the chapter(l,hospitalite comme fondimment de soin)(paris gilmmard 1990)from that time french writer increase conseption of hospitality industry as treatment philosophy then hospitality industry as demonstration of career branch hospitals and clinic sector engaged the main umbrella of career branch of hospitality industry, the french writer mentioned that professional hospitality effect in treatment conduct which reduce pain for people whom suffering and broken from disease, therefore hospitality is human adjective and Marriott operation philosophy collect between human adjectives ,social activities and development standards thus your new opening will be going in the same target, which for purpose to hosting family patient during treatment period, the facilties mentioned in article such as midia lounge or private kitchen or complementry breakfast also new standrds otherwise there is anthor classification in hotels industry called (hoteliere apartment)but without your same standards mentioned above such as complementry breakfast or midia lounge it means that your facilties is new standards in world of hotels industry which is going with your policie in developing tradisional standards, kindly note that my suggetion to this type of hotels classification is add cultural coffee include magazines and daily newspapper with menu of variety coffee cocktail and selected of waffeles items and pancake, available baby seeter ,free toys kids for happy meal or nice meal or grandmother meal or jaky meal such as cornflax ,pordge tomato omelet,Philadelphia sandwich will be suitable for children in case the family of patient has child during thier accommodation until treatment period of their relative had finished

Hello Bill. Thanks for all your great communications. I share your 'on the move' articles with many friends and relatives, many of whom have become subscribers. I am no stranger to The Mayo Clinic in Arizona as I was once involved in the Food and Housekeeping services there when Marriott Management Services had the service contract for the facility. I remember when the Courtyard opened on the campus and now you will have a Residence Inn, a perfect type of propery for the longer stay patients of this world renowned health care facility.
I recently stayed in a new generation RI property in So. California and was so impressed with the improvements that I started a list of the 10 best things I liked about the studio room accomodations and that list quickly grew to 15 items. Here they are:
1. Great new contemporary decor
2. Modern satinless kitchen appliances
3. Improved comfort in all the seating
4. Added foot hassock in seating area
5. Wonderfully large flat screen TV
6. Expanded drawer storage in the furniture pieces
7. Big night stand next to the bed
8. KING SIZED BED, FINALLY !!!
9. Efective lighting and convenient switches
10. Finally, a high visablity light over the bathroom vanity
11. Super towel and cabinet storage design in the bath area
12. Bedside outlets accessable without moving furniture
13. Shower head high enough for full sized people
14. Free Internet connection
15. And...IT FEELS LIKE HOME!
So there are 15 reasons I like the new RI guest room. Thank you, Bill for continuing to improve all the fine Marriott products. It makes me proud to have been with you long enough to become a QCC member and to continue to encourage everyone I know to keep staying at Marriott Hotels.

Bill,
Happy Birthday, one Aries to another(27th)!
Hope you celebrate many more, for the world wouldn't be the same without your leadership.

Mr. Marriott the last sentence on your posting says quote I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

QUESTION: Mr. Marriott did the fact that you are chairman of the Mayo Clinic Capital Campaign influence decision of property built ?
