They say you can't be in two places at once, but I learned today you can, thanks to technology!
Today we celebrated two big milestones with one big event. First, the Courtyard Portland City Center in Oregon, which opened just a few months ago, officially received its LEED-Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and there are only 20 hotels in the United States that have earned that label.
At the same time, the Courtyard Chevy Chase in Md., officially opened today after a $35 million renovation. This hotel also expects to be LEED-certified by the end of the year. It's among 50 Marriott hotels currently registered for LEED certification.
Even though I could only be in Chevy Chase today, I was able to join the Portland event too via our live webcast. The two events were linked together and we could see each other talk back and forth.
Today's event was really interesting as we watched what was going on in Portland and listened to it, and they could hear what we were doing here in Washington. It was exciting to see that even though our company is growing larger, the world is getting smaller, thanks to technology. The fact that we were able to share this event, not only with people in attendance at each location, but also with thousands of viewers on the web, made it worthwhile.
In case you missed today's event, you can watch the webcast in its entirety at www.courtyardgreencoast2coast.com and see our pictures on Flickr.
I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for keeping Marriott on the move.
Two Courtyard Hotels Make Eco-History

Excellent job! More hotels need to follow your lead in becoming more conscious about our environment. Also, take a good look at how your staff and outside vendors maintain the rooms and common areas. Are they using environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals and processes?

Hotel to Guests: Pedal for Electricity, Get a Voucher
The 366-room Danish hotel ... is offering a radically cool eco initiative--possibly the first in the world--by letting guests pedal away on exercise bikes for a free meal.

I think offering an option like this would position Marriott as a leader in eco-friendly businesses and also may encourage greater spending in Marriott hotels

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I'm a Marriott Rewards member and am pleased to find this blog. I'm staying at the Marriott Raleigh City Center right now, with a group of writers/speakers/journalists. I'd like to send you a comment about my experience here this morning - is there an address I can write to?
