Celebrating the First Marriott-Branded Hotel Built on U.S. Tribal Land

Posted: February 25, 2010 01:42:15 PM

Marriott-and-Salt-River-Devco-Team-Source-AAN One of my very favorite spots in the world to vacation is the Arizona desert.  Since I was 16 years old, I have spent time with my family at our Camelback Inn Resort, just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, first with my parents and now with my great grandchildren.  We love the climate and the great Native American culture.

Last night, not far from our Camelback Inn, members of our Marriott development team celebrated a huge milestone for our company.  We signed our first ever Marriott-branded hotel owned by Native Americans and built on tribal land in the United States.  It’s a Courtyard by Marriott that will be situated in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community just outside of Scottsdale.

At Marriott, we pride ourselves on our diverse ownership initiative where we work to develop hotels with companies owned and operated by diverse groups.  We enjoy working with and learning from people from many cultures and work hard to be a very inclusive company.

It’s exciting for us to be developing a hotel with a diverse enterprise like Salt River Devco that is part of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.  It’s an honor to be building this hotel.  We look forward to a very prosperous relationship with the Community.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Congratulations on the new Courtyard on tribal lands.

One of my first trips on Marriott Rewards was the Camelback Inn because I knew the history of the resort. Upon arrival in June, I was greeted in the lobby by two teenage members of the Marriott family who were working at Camelback that summer. They said they were working all around the hotel but this week they were "lobby managers". We had a great week that we will always remeber, and we would like to go back. So many Marriott's, so little time...

Dear Bill,

Thanks always for your great updates. Hopefully, other enterprising native communities also in other parts of the world will follow suit as this could set a trend. Last year was my first time to stay at a Marriott property in the Arizona desert(Marriott Canyon Villas at Desert Ridge)and really loved it. Would love to visit this new property next time I go to Phoenix again. Would be great if the hotel restaurants will serve Native American meals and sell Native American goods which can be part of the property's attraction. Wishing the management of the property and Marriott the best in this enterprise.

Way to go, Mr. Marriott! My best friend is a Native American Princess from Virginia whose name is "White Dove" - her Father (now deceased) was a Chief. Her brother has succeeded her Father as the current Chief. They are direct descendants of Pocahontas. I am sure she will be very proud when I tell her the news.

Dear sir,
I recently spent some time in your hotel in Marco Island and liked the size of your sofa bed. I did not use this item but was intrested in the demensions to see if it would fit in my small bedroom. Knowing you only purchase quality items I was wondering the brand and the actual size. Could you please forward me that information. Thank you very much.

Dear Bill,
We are presently holidaying at the Kauaii Marriott and would like to draw your attention to the way your staff here handled the Tsunami threat. I have only the highest praise for their hard work both in ensuring that everything was prepared fot any possibility but also in the quick way that the hotel returned to normal. I know they would say that it is 'just the Marriott way' but here are two guests who would like to say 'Thank you'
Best wishes,
Alison & Kevin Heffernan

Dear Mr. Marriott,
In reality all hotels have two powerful things in common. Aside from their hospitality service they resemble international embassies combining people within their premises with different travel reasons. Frankly speaking it is a true miracle made possible by the needs of the strong businesses and tourism services that are served by modern air travel at outstanding speeds and that link our globe together. For some a trip to a hotel is for enjoying the entertainment provided there, while others are there for the business and meeting facilities. Hotels are for a third category a crossroad, perhaps for a day or two before flying to another destination. I have frequently come across people that have stressful flight schedules, like aircraft crews, journalists and businessmen with aggressive agendas that live off of a suitcase and know no other home that the five star premises. Within their different nationalities, mentalities and expectations all regard hotel as their home or peaceful transit stop and rely on its services for support. When those five stars hang on that wall, immediately anticipate that the guests will have very high expectations concerning the premises. They are there to ease up their burdens in their rooms and savor some comfort before their next meeting or flight. Frankly speaking, as a professional that has been working for some time in the field of hotel hospitality, I regard guest service as a way of life. There is no other way if you want to be successful in your job as a hotel employee. Believe me being there to work for the salary will not make your guests happy. It’s all about going the extra mile to make them smile and feel the dazzling service at the hotel they are in. All hotels have room accommodations, F&B, restaurants and meeting room facilities. But what are you doing as an employee to make them smile and meet their expectations so they can feel the difference at your hotel and distinguish between it and other hotels. Salaries will never motivate you enough for this criterion. It is if you love your job as an employee and want to go that extra mile in satisfying your guests’ needs to top what they even expect.

My siser has worked for Marriot for over 30 yrs. she is Native American and the new Marriot will be build on her tribal home land. The hotel will right in her back yard. The native people are becoming economically self-sufficient these days with the lands they were put on so many years ago. Wonderful!

Great news, Bill!

In this regard, Marriott really has led the way!

Talk about Marriott's diversity --- How about at least four Marriott-branded hotels in Alaska?: The Anchorage Courtyard and Residence Inn one of the Anchorage Springhill Suites, and the Fairbanks Springhill Suites.

These hotels are owned and managed by NANA hospitality Inc. and NANA, Inc., the for-profit arm of the Northwest Alaska Native Association. NANA - based in Kotzebue, Alaska - is one of the intentionally for-profit regional native corporations formed under the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act of 1971, an effort by Congress to help Alaska's Eskimos, Indians and Aleuts become more self-sufficient and to settle aboriginal land claims.

When my family lived in Nome during the 1970s, we knew NANA as one of the few profitable native corporations.

Fast-forward thirty years---I almost always at the Anchorage Courtyard on my Alaska business trips. Its very encouraging to see NANA partnering with Marriott in the ownership and operation of more Marriott-branded properties in Alaska than virtually anyone else.

Brilliant move Marriott!!! Now look to New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa for more additional hotels-those venues will delight anyone who hasn't been or lived in those areas, for they are truly paradise!

I would also like to see a Residence Inn (two or more) on O'ahu. Makes perfect business sense, even put it over on Laie side.

Like an earlier post, I don't understand why the FFI&S in Cherokee, NC is not considered the first Marriott Branded Hotel on Tribal land. That hotel is within the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Sorry this post doesn't have anything to do with the new Marriott, but I couldn't find another location to brag about a Marriott employee.

As always, Marriott Hotels have exceeded our expectations. The beautiful Laureen at Marriott Courtyard on 2nd street in San Francisco went above and beyond customer service expectations for my wife this evening. She is away from home on her birthday. I called Laureen, and asked her for some help. She quickly jumped to action, rounded up some birthday candles, ice cream and a card, then proceeded to join the room service person for a happy birthday duet, and a giant hug, making my wife's birthday away from home special. Thank you Laureen, and to the rest of the Marriott friends for always taking superb care of us. Alan & Christie

Dear Bill: I am on an unusual mission. Let me introduce myself. My name is Pete Simpson, brother of former senator, Al Simpson. I am Vice President Emeritus at the University of Wyoming and am retiring from teaching political science there in May. In June, my wife and I will be taking a car trip of two weeks to the Pacific Northwest for our Golden Wedding Anniversary. We are Marriott regulars and members of the Marriott Rewards system. We plan to stay in a Marriott 9 of the 13 days of our trip. Does Marriott have any special services or rates for such an undertaking? Whether Yea or Nay, we are Marriott bound! So, know that we prize the work you've done and the splendid accommodations at prices former profs can afford. Thank you for that and for any other advice you might have. Meanwhile, Godspeed and keep up the wonderful work.
Sincerely, Pete Simpson

This means that you need a good entertainment center that will work with your collection, and will look good in your home. Entertainmentcenterspot.com is one of the best places to go for this, because they have the widest selection you will ever find for such low prices.

Dear Mr. Mariott,
As a fan of Mariott hotels, I would like to see one in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. This would be in line with celebrating diversity around the globe and across cultures. Radisson and Westin seems to have recognized the potential of Bangladesh and moved in within the last few years. Radisson built its hotel close to the airport, while Westin boasts the first five star hotel in Gulshan commercial area--- the most sought-after commercial location in the country. Radisson apparently just signed a joint venture agreement for a second hotel in the country's coastline. My family happens to own a piece of land close to Westin. I can easily visualize that someday a tall tower will sit there. Prime land is scarce in that part of the city. If you want to build near Westin I would like to be of help. How can one reach your international development team? Thanks for listening.
