Anticipating the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai

May 1, 2010
Shanghai Skyline Today marks the beginning of one of the largest global events in history – the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.  This expo is much like the World’s Fairs that were held decades ago in places like New York, Paris, Stockholm and Montreal.  I was seven years old when I visited the World’s Fair in New York in 1939.  I’ll always remember it as a great experience.

This is the first event of this scale to be held in China and 70 million people from around the world are expected to attend.  It opens on May 1st and closes on October 31st of this year.  Most people who visit will be Chinese who are traveling within their own country more and more, and also traveling abroad.

China captured the attention a global audience as they hosted the Summer Olympics and hosting the World Expo is a great way to showcase their nation to the world again.  It’s also a great way for other countries and companies to introduce themselves to the Chinese people.

More than 190 countries and 50 international organizations are participating in this expo and Marriott is proud to be a sponsor and exhibitor at the USA pavilion, which is expected to draw the largest crowds.

We’re thrilled to be able to host so many visitors from all parts of the world as we have 14 hotels in Shanghai from various brands including Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance and Courtyard by Marriott.

I will actually be traveling to China later this month and plan to visit the World Expo myself, so stay tuned and I’ll give you an update about my trip.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Mr. Marriott--

I just returned home to Massachusetts after spending a week at your Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel on Nob Hill. I was in California working on the final photo shoot for my website. The Stanford Court has become the Feeney family's "home away from home." I cannot say enough words of praise for the management and staff of the Stanford Court. The view from the room we always request is spectacular. The food presented at your upscale restaurant, served by our favorite waiter, Ramone, is always 5 star quality. Everyone from the bell staff, housekeeping, Mr. ***, Shannon, and Sha, of the concierge department, to Raul and his fellow door staff always greet us by name. There are hundreds of hotel choices in San Franciso. In our book, there is only one choice--The Renaissance Stanford Court, Nob Hill, SF, CA, USA. Brendan Ben Feeney

Dear Mr. Marriott--
I am confused by Mr. Charlie Wright's post dated 5/17/2010 about being reluctant to visit San Francisco. Please have him contact me and I will personally discuss my fondness of the Renaissance Stanford Court, recommend restaurants, cultural attractions and dubunk the myth that San Francisco--in his words--is full of "liberal lunacy." It is one of the most beautiful, cosmopolitan cities in the world with kind, helpful residents. Brendan Ben Thomas Feeney II. PS: I hope Mr. Scott ***** received the letter I sent you noting my mother selected San Francisco--and your hotel---to celebrate her 80th birthday. The staff at the Stanford Court were gracious and treated us like family.

Dear Mr. Marriot;

I was looking for a vacation site and San Francisco came to mind. I had been there in my earlier years and was enthralled by its persona and ambience. However, its political climate has changed so markedly that I would be very reluctant to return. I would feel that I am supporting the liberal lunacy that its constituents now display. The magic of San Fran (along with the area in general)is now permanently tainted in the eyes of very many across our nation. I was wondering if this aspect has negatively affected your wonderful company's business there.

Dear Mr. Marriott,

I'm staying at the JW on Tomorrow square and I"m purely excited about the hotel, to be in a locaion that is more american quality than chinese expectations.

Thank you for having set up such a location for worldwide travellers.

Hope to meet you there or on the EXPO!

Dear Mr. Marriott

Shanghai, China welcomes you, please share your thoughts of Shanghai Marriott Hotels after your visit.

Will be in Shanghai next week on vacation. WE will look forward to seeing USA Pavillion and hopefully, Marriott properties. dont speak any Chinese, so I know that if we get to a Marriott property.... someone will be able to help us or we may get a meal that we are sure is ok to eat. Thanks for all you do.

Dear Bill,

Deeply welcome you to China, hope you have a great trip in Shanghai Expo.

Dear Mr. Mariott
I really like this kind of blog, and the conversation you made possible, but why you never give an anweser to the blogposts?

I just wanted to contact you to let you no, Me and my wife stayed at the Charlestons SC Marriott on Lockwood Blvd, We had a van driver that took us down town each day, This guy Thad is the best person I have ever had the pleasure to deal with at any motel/hotel I have ever been to and that is at least 6 a month. We were on vacation and Thad called and set up a tour the tour co didn,t show up. The next day he ask how we liked the tour we told him they never showed up. He took it like it was his company he called and set up for them to pick us up right away. He is the reason that each time we go to SC we will return to that hotel. This guy is what service is all about.

Mr. Marriott , I am a professional wallpaper (vwc) installer and would love to get on your team for your new projects or renovations . I travel and have done several of your hotels already from Kansas city to Louisville. I have 20 years experience in vwc installation . Please contact me and let me know how I can get on your team . Thank you for your time .

Dear Bill,
I read with interest you blog on the website and applaud you desire to connect with your customers and your staff. This may not be the most appropriate means for what I am about to say but I wanted to get past the layers of middle management and speak to you directly. I read an article in Bloomberg that said Marriott were seeking expansion opportunities in Europe. Well, here is an opportunity. My partners and I own a 250 hectare site in the geographical centre of Europe, complete with planning permission for a hotel, casino,18 hole golf course and 200+ plots for villas and apartments. It is an hour by air from Moscow and a ferry ride across The Baltic sea from Scandinavia. This is NOT a hoax but a real opportunity. If you're not interested then forgive me for taking up your time but if you want to know more, my number is (+**) *** ******* and my name is Mickey Peng-Kit Chin.

Hope Mr. Marriott to come to my home. Welcome and anticipate.

The Marriott properties in Shanghai are outstanding. I was staying with Jorgen last month (April 2010), the General Manager at the Renaissance Yuyuan, close to one of the expo gates. This property offered outstanding service and exceeded my expectations. In addition the other Marriott Managers in Shanghai I have had World Class outstanding experience staying with include Michael at JW Marriott, Meng at Chungfeng Park Marriott, Renaissance Yangtze etc. Marriott service in China is super and Marriott properties are well positioned to take care and enhance the Expo experience of the visitors. Thank you and Mr. Sorenson for your leadership in making it happen. Syed T. A. Naqvi, Platinum Emeritus

welcome to Shanghai and visit the EXPO.

Mr. Marriott,
I love keeping up with you via your newsletter and I'm thrilled you will be in China for the Worlds Fair and look forward to getting your report.
Also want you to know about the World Choir Games that will be in America in 2012 in the city of Cincinnati in
Ohio.
I know your history quite well because I'm from Utah and
now live in Cincinnati. I'm involved with the World Choir Games that will be dedicated to Maestro Erich Kunzel, Cincinnati POPS Conductor and our 'Music Ambassador' to the World who died last September.
Marriott Hotels will be most
important to all the guests from the entire world.

Isn't it amazing, I was 5 years old when I went to the Worlds Fair and I still remember it also. Enjoy your trip and take lots of photos.

Regards, Michael Angelo

Thank you Bill Marriott for sending me my rewards card.

This is one photographer who appreciates a nice hotel!

Could you tell me if it was factual as to what took place within the Ritz-Carlton brand with the British family?
