Being Recognized As a Great Place to Work

Posted: May 4, 2010 11:48:22 AM

Bill Marriott with Hourly Associates I just attended a luncheon at our Renaissance Mayflower hotel in Washington, D.C., to celebrate a wonderful award that our company just received.  Working Mother Media just named Marriott one of the best companies for hourly workers and I was thrilled to accept this award on behalf of our company and our many thousands of hourly associates.

It was a great event because I could hear, on a panel, all the things companies are doing to care for their hourly workers.  Most of us on the panel were in the service business and we all said, the hourly worker is the face of our company.  The hourly worker is the person who interacts with the customer and our customer service depends on whether those hourly workers are well trained, enjoy their work and enjoy working with customers.  It’s a very important thing for us to have the right people in the right job at the hourly level.

Our terrific associates are the cornerstone of our success.  Their hard work and dedication to provide great service keeps our guests coming back again and again.  And, to show appreciation for all they do, we work hard to ensure that our associates have a healthy work environment and are well cared for.

When my folks first founded our company with a nine stool A&W root beer stand, they ran their business under the principle that if you take care of your associates, they will take care of the customer and the customer will come back again and again.  One of my parents’ main objectives was making sure their workforce was always in good health, and they started the first healthcare system in our industry back in 1935 by hiring a doctor whose full time job was taking care of our employees.

Today, we operate by the same principle and provide all of our full time hourly associates with comprehensive health care coverage.  Even during the recession of the past few years, when many of our hourly associates had to work reduced hours, we worked to ensure they could still maintain coverage for themselves and their families.

We also strive to provide our associates with a workplace where they feel valued and have opportunities to grow.  For example, Christine Dowling Lopez came to the U.S. seven years ago and began working at our JW Marriott hotel in Washington, D.C.  She was an executive assistant in the banquets department.  Today, she is an event supervisor and is in charge of a team that puts on many meetings and events, large and small.  You can learn more about Christine and her career with Marriott by watching the video below.

Today’s event was a wonderful way to honor our associates around the world who take care of our guests every day and make Marriott a leader in the lodging industry.  I thank each and every one of them for all they do.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

As an academician turned entrepreneur I have a policy which considers an employee as a colleague. One company is 10 years old, the other 3 years old. No colleague has left the companies yet.
Marriott, I am certain, has the same respect and care for the employees. This Blog and consquently the Award is a great tribute to the success of Marriott.

I am in UK and would like to know the diff in terminology between: 'The hourly worker' and the 'full time hourly associates'? Is the 1st one a contractor? and the 2nd a permanent employee?

**Editor's Response**
Thank you for your comment, Carolina. When Mr. Marriott referred to full time hourly associates, he was referring to those that work enough hours a week to qualify for healthcare coverage. We also employ part-time hourly worker who work fewer hours/week.

Hi Bill,

I like your hotels and stay them often. I saw that Marriot is a corporate partner of the National Council of La Raza. What do you think of their "boycott intollerance" campaign against the state of Arizona. Also why do you support this?

Seems strange that you would position your brand with "Ask the White Guy."

Look forward to your reply, Bill.

Marriott certainly deserves this honor. I do business with a lot of Marriotts and can't say enough about the support staff on theri efficiency, always a smile on their face and there instantly when you need something. I could not do my job as a meeting professional without the support staff. They make me look good!

Marriott/Americal Airlines - How do we voice displesure with this departure from American, we have been associate with Marriott and Marriott Vacation Clubs and were very disappointed. Must be very disapointing to you personally to lose such a great partner. Now we will have to start all over again, and on such short notice.

There is no place on your web site which allows one to write to the President of the Company, by email, or snail mail. No "CONTACT" button. This should be available, don't you think???

Congrats! I have a suggestion for your website. I am looking for a specific category of hotel to redeem some of my points. Why don't you display the category number right next to the hotel name? That saves an extra click!
What do you think?

Dear Mr. Marriott,

Congratulations to Marriott for being recognized as a great place to work. The NH Lions recently hosted our annual recreational weekend for the blind and visually impaired at the Nashua, NH Courtyard by Marriott for the second year in a row and every single employee we encountered in the planning stages and throughout the weekend event were attentive, accommodating and gracious. If you have a corporate customer service award at Marriott I highly recommend that you acknowledge this location; they truly deserve it. Throughout the weekend, even though the hotel was full of travelers and another large group, the hotel staff and catering department made us feel like we the most important guests at the hotel. Many of our blind participants have attended this annual event for nearly twenty years and they have told me that the Nashua Courtyard by Marriott is their favorite location. It was a wonderful weekend and I sincerely congratulate the Marriott employees in Nashua, NH.

This past weekend my wife and I, her brother and his wife stayed at the Springhill Suites, in Arcadia, California. We were there to attend our son's graduation from Kaplan College. I want to commend the staff of the hotel, especially Tina and Shawn at the front desk and Janet in the breakfast area. They were absolutely customer focused and a pleasure to meet and talk to. Everything about our 2 night stay was excellent. "Thank You" to them and the entire staff.

I am a Platinum member and have been for many years. I just checked into the Marriott Hartford Downtown hotel. I come to this hotel every 3 or 4 months, the last time I was at this hotel was in June 2011. Tonight when I arrived, Andre who works the valet for the hotel recognized me and welcomed me back. In fact every time I arrive Andre does the same thing. The recognization by Andre makes me feel extremely welcome. Andre is a credit to Marriott and should receive my thanks from you. Thanks, Clayton Kloehr
