Remembering My Dad 25 Years Later

Posted: August 13, 2010 08:21:40 AM

JW Marriott Sr at TwinBridges Marriott It’s August 13, 2010, and I am standing on the front porch of our New Hampshire lakeside home.  It was on this spot 25 years ago to the day that my father, J. Willard Marriott, Sr., had a heart attack and passed away.

Almost all of my family and my brother Richard’s family were gathered for a family barbecue, or, in New Hampshire terms, a cookout.  We had wonderful cheeseburgers, potato salad and corn on the cob.  When the corn was passed, my dad looked at mine and said that his corn was fresh and juicy and mine looked old and dry.  He insisted on trading corn and giving me his ear.  Then he said, “What we need is better corn around here!”  Those were his final words to me.

As many of you know, my dad founded our company in 1927 when he and my mother opened a 9-stool A&W root beer stand in Washington, D.C.  When the weather got cold, people stopped drinking root beer.  They put on hot dogs, hamburgers and chili and called their little place a Hot Shoppe.  All through the 1930’s, they continued to expand their Hot Shoppes into a larger chain of drive-in restaurants and opened their first Marriott hotel in 1957 in Washington.

My father’s final words about improving the quality of the corn at a family cookout were typical of his eternal quest for quality and never being satisfied with anything but perfection.  He kept his Hot Shoppe restaurants spotless.  Every Friday was inspection day, and in my teenage years, I often accompanied him as he visited the various Hot Shoppes.

We not only inspected the kitchen and the dining room, but also the parking lot, which he insisted be hosed down and scrubbed every morning.  When we started opening hotels, he demanded that the bellman have a cleaning cloth and a bottle of window cleaner to keep the fingerprints off the front doors.

His pursuit of perfection was hard on my mother, my brother and me as everything at home had to be as neat and clean as it was in his Hot Shoppes.  He built a great business and left behind an enduring quest to always be improving and trying to make the customer experience as close to perfection as possible.  He left an inspiring legacy of that great pursuit.  He really believed that success was never final.

I’m Bill Marriott and thank you for helping me keep Marriott on the move to perfection.

Thanks for sharing. I have never commented before, but want you to know I find your stories interesting and inspiring. The goals, standards, commitment and enduring tenacity to do it right and better is commendable and even more admirable when one's leadership can inspire a team of employees to live it.

Thank You for sharing your family history about your father and how Marriott Corp. had got it start in 1927.

Thanks to all the Marriott family for maintaining quality run hotels at all price levels. Thanks for remembering that some senior citizens do not always have a lot of money to spend on hotels.Your father was a great teacher-----remembering him this way is a very postive reflection upon the family.

Keep up the fine work. We visited your Shirlington facility regularly in the early 60's and it was great. Hotels have followed suit- we could use a Marriott in the airline business!

Dear Mr Marriott,
I remember your well! I was fortunate to meet your parents at the opening in 1975 of the first Amsterdam Marriott as an exec chef task force member coming from St Louis where I met you several time. What I wanted to share with you is that I did not meet with your parents again until 1984 in FortLauderdale and did chat few minutes with your mother. We went down memory lane. She did well remember how astonishing the flowers were on the opening buffet and said, she had never saw anything of this magnitude ever before and really I did not forgot that either. If you travel to Atlanta I would be honor and please to shake your hand again in your busy schedule it has been a long time
Sincerely

Dear Mr. Marriott,
I enjoyed hearing the story of your Father and I'm sure you miss him everyday, as he was a great part of your life. My Dad passed away several years ago and it is a great loss to our family. My Dad had good work ethics and fortunately has passed them on to his children.
A new Marriott is coming to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and I am excited about the possibilities. Marriott is
one of those companies that really cares about their employees and I look forward to being one of those employees in the near future.

Those are wonderful memories and words that you express with phenomenal sincerity particularly in today's world were so much is the NOW and WHAT CAN U DO 4 ME!!!! You are certainly fulfilling a fantastic legacy and bring a great deal of pride to the Marriott name - May you and your family always appreciate this legacy.

We are constantly reminding anyone/everyone who will listen that Marriott stands for unequivocal "quality" and if there is a shortfall, it will quickly be resolved. We have impressed upon our son and his bride-to-be with the Marriott quality and I am delighted to share that there wedding reception will be held at The Lodge - Renaissance Sonoma on October 16.

Dear Mr. Bill Marriott

I doubt you will ever actually personally read these few comments, though it would be nice to think that you did.
I enjoy reading your "Marriott on the Move" blogs, always a testimony to little things in life that mean the most.
In my PhD thesis on Basic Life Support I actually quoted from the "Marriott Way" as an examplar of good practice. So I guess you are preaching to the converted, for me and my family the name Marriott is synonymous with quality and care in the hospitality industry.
As a Marriott owner living in the U.K. and owning at the Marriott Grande Vista in Florida I would be really grateful if you could do something about allowing European owners who own in Florida to have the option of exchanging their weeks for points every year. As we grow older, trans atlantic flights are less common, whereas a quick 2hr flight to a Marriott in Spain is far more convenient and easier for us as our travel needs change as we get older.
My wife and I are both nurses and while I teach at the University in Manchester we also own our own company that trains employees in First Aid at Work
www.pfe-firstaid.com
We already train staff at the Hilton Hotels in the
U.K. and would be happy to do the same at Marriott at a very low and discounted price in return can you at least look at our "points" situation and see if there is anything that could be done?
With the deepest of respect and very kind reagrds

Nostagia... Hot Shoppe conjours up the days just out of college (1950) when I was teaching at Sidwell Friends School and had a "dry" boyfriend... in the army stationed in D.C. Our frequent BIG date was when he took me to get an ORANGE FREEZE at the Hot Shoppe on Wisconsin Avenue. The orange freeze melted...and so did the romance..Can I get an "orange freeze" anywhere now?
My "upscale outings" were a visit to the "Shoreham" (managed by Mr. Bralove) for luncheon with Mrs. Peterson and the Pre-school staff...or a Utah Society event graciously done at the same venue.

Mr. Marriott, I always enjoy your Marriott on the Move comments. I especially found today's very poignant. My Dad's birthday was August 13 and he just passed away at age 92 on July 19. Like your father, my Dad was very much loved and respected and believed that his family was the most important part of his life. His passing has left a big gap in our lives as your loss did.

Your father is within me Bill Jr. He is a shining example of perfection as evident and expreienced in my 775+ nights at Marriott properties worldwide. Only one (1) is/was what I would have deemed a disappointment to your father and I am ever impressed with the latest design and innovation Marriott Int'l is creating.

My latest stay at Las Vegas Conv. Center SHS was the most aesthetically rewarding I've ever had to date. The brainchild of this particular hotel concept prototype (most assuredly from your father) is gifted and I would love to have my own 620sq ft apt. designed as these rooms are, in its usability, practicality and cathartic ambiance. Kudos to Marriott.

Going to miss Plat this year though. I'm ever loyal to Marriott and Co. Thank you Dad and Bill!

P.S. I have an idea for a property development in Salt Lake. Who might I speak with at Marriott about developing an existing property into the Mayfair type potential.

Dear Bill,

As a Platinum member I've made your hotel chain my first choice for lodging. I have a few ideas for you concerning minimizing energy usage.
1. Hotels could be designed with an attractive staircase. Why take the elevator for one story?
2. Charge for energy usage in the rooms. If people are paying they will use less energy.
3. I still get into hotel rooms that have the air conditioning blasting away.
4. I will often set the thermostat at 75 degrees, I could be compensated for saving energy.
5. Saving energy feeds your bottom line and is good for the p lanet. Love those win-win situations.

Thanks for great service and great accomodations!

My points allow my entire family to be together with a nice room for Christmas every year. It's the greatest present for my Mom.

Thanks,
Randy Arnold

Dear Mr. Marriott,

I always enjoy listening to your blogs --- hearing your voice is wonderful - and music to my ears --- as it brings back so many memories of those days gone by.

I remember so well that August date - and the days that followed. In your Dad's office, - I had the pleasure of speaking with Rev. Billy Graham many times, and then I met him at the Funeral Home - and heard him, speak at the Memorial Service for your DAD, and a man I admired, as did so many.

I enjoyed all the days working in your Dad's office and then yours along with Mary ***** and others, including Lois ******, who is still there with you.

Thanks for your Marriott on the Move, - I sure enjoy it.

With warmest wishes and prayers,

Trudi Blakeslee
Venice, FL
