What's an Executive Chairman?

April 30, 2012

I don’t have an opportunity to hand out many business cards, but my new card says “Executive Chairman.”  You don't see that job title popping up on careerbuilder.com.

New Business CardYou might be wondering what my new job is all about.  I guess you need 40 years of experience as CEO.  It doesn’t hurt to have your name above the door.

In applying for the job, I told our board of directors I’m ideally suited for the position.  They never asked for my resume'.  But if they had, here it is:

I worked in the accounting office when I was 14 sorting invoices and doing filing.  My first real job was as a soda jerk in one of the Hot Shoppes.  Of course, I was an Eagle Scout.  I graduated from the University of Utah.  I was a supply officer in the United States Navy on an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.

Eagle ScoutI finally joined Marriott in 1956.  I was Executive Vice President in January 1964 and President in November 1964.  I became CEO in 1972, Chairman of the Board in 1985 and Executive Chairman in 2012.

Every job prepared me for the next and I had a wonderful mentor and a tough boss for most of my career.  He was also my dad.  My responsibility has always been pretty clear: “To become the number one hospitality company in the world.“

So how will my new job fit into our Marriott Business Objectives or "MBO’s," as we call them.  Here are my objectives as Executive Chairman:

  • Advise our new CEO Arne Sorenson and his first-rate, global executive team.
  • Visit our hotels and check in with our General Managers and shake hands with the people who are on the frontlines.
  • Be an ambassador for global travel.  I love this one because the more people travel, the more they learn about other cultures, and the more money comes back into the global economy creating jobs.
  • And finally, through all my travels, to spread and preserve our Marriott culture and values of "Putting People First" and "Serving Our World."

If you have some other suggestions on what an Executive Chairman should do, comment below.  It’s a new job for me and I plan on growing into it for years to come.

I'm Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Hi Mr. Bill Marriott!

First, I'm a little late, but I hope you find as much joy and fulfillment in your new position as in the previous. I'm a housekeeper at a full service Marriott in California and everyday I look forward to going into work because I know that by doing my job I'm helping guests enjoy their stays as much as possible; visiting on business or for pleasure they deserve the best. Marriott offers a unique atmosphere for employees and offers an environment in which everyone is valued and appreciated; I see managers and co-workers treat one another with no less respect than they might treat a valued guest.

Marriott absolutely stands out because of it's values and standards of service and I hope to exemplify the passion for people and spirit to serve for many years. Thank you for creating such a wonderful company and best wishes for your future as well!

Dear Executive Chairman
Hope you are well and in a good spirit all the people has got the privilege work in the hospitality world are sure you are following the best of the best non because you put the people first is your value.

Mr. Marriott,

I hope this email finds you well.

Yesterday I read an interesting question that you made regarding suggestions on how to mold your responsibilities as Executive Chairman.

Respectfully, I am going to give you a quick and what I believe powerful suggestion.

How about writing a personal letter in gratitude to a customer that exemplifies loyalty to our brand or specific hotel.

For example, as you are aware Panama results are under a lot of pressure as inventory in the City has increased from 3,700 rooms in 2010 to 9,090 by YE of 2012.

Even with these figures the Panama Marriott has been able to increase YOY Market Share Index more 10.7%.

One of the main reasons for this is the support that we are receiving from MAYTAG which gives us more than 31% of our yearly Special Corp production which translates into more than a million dollar in yearly revenues.

This production is mainly driven by the relentless support of our main contact in MAYTAG which stirs our way all of the business that She can.

So on this note my suggestion would be to once a month select Worldwide a couple of these customers and write to them.

In my perspective this would be a “Wow Experience” for our loyal customer.

An experience that would, in my opinion, definitely touch the fiber/essence of commitment and with it help us win them over as “Raving Fans” for years to come.

Respectfully,

Omar Rivera

I'd like to take the opportunity to point out the outstanding performance of James Rogan the Food and Beverage Director at the Marriott Resort in Aruba. My wife and I visit Aruba every 6 months. We have noticed a most pleasant and significant improvement in the food and beverage service operations during our recent visit. It is very evident the quality and value of the food and beverage offerings have improved and most importantly the customer service has become first class. I spoke with James and he is clearly a direct factor in this much needed improvement. His enthusiasm, professionialism and caring management style exemplifies the Marriott standard. He took the time to explain the changes that have been made and plans for future improvements. I sincerely hope James (and particularly his Team at the Surf Club Pool Foodservice) receive recognition for this superior effort and my personal thanks. Job extremely well done! Lamar McMath

Bill,

Further to a recent stay at a JW Marriott, I am attempting to send a personal thank you and CC'ing in the highest level of Exec (thats how good it was), so, please can you ping me back (at the address above), the best contact/e-address.

I would like to work with the Marriott in creating (diverse) multi-culture business opportunities to expand into a broader range of clients. I'm a Marriott Silver Elite Member, the service and quality at all the Marriott's I have stayed at was A+. This has inspired me to want to work on a program with Marriott in opening some very diverse doors. I would like everyone to experience the great service and affordable luxury Marriott brings to the market. Please give me some insight on starting this process. I have 18 years of marketing expertise.

Thank You

Gem Lake

Bill-
Now that you might have a little time; I recommend reading a book by Diana Henriques called The Wizard of Lies ...Bernie Madoff and the death of trust...

My husband and I were heavily invested in real estate in the Tucson Market...early in 2007 when we saw trouble in this market, I took a job with your company and then encouraged Bob (my husband) to come and work for you...Well we lost our retirement savings in real estate and I still have my Marriott job which I'm grateful for.

My husband and I are starting again and my 401K is heavily leaning with Marriott stock...Bob was laid off from Starr Pass and on unemployment for a year...I 'm hopeful I'll get back to Tucson on August 1st to resume my Concierge position...

The reason I tell you this is we lost only money, we have good health and are still vital at 65...Bernie Madoff has a son who killed himself, and a world of people who hate him, a wife who won't share his later years with
him and another son who doesn't talk to him...

What you and your family have are a company that provides jobs for people and a loving atmosphere where there is workplace equality...I was in aviation all my working life and wish I had found Marriott earlier...

God Bless you Bill Marriott

PS: When you said on one of your blogs that your wife encouraged you to try Pilates, I knew any man who listens to his wife and was an eagle scout should be someone to listen to...

Mr Marriott,

Congrats on your new job and best of luck in your new role. As a Marriott customer, I just wanted to let you know how impressed I have been with your company as I have watched it grow over the years. In my opinion, the Marriott brand is an iconic American institution that has risen to the top by doing things the right way. You mentioned that one role in your new position will be "to spread and preserve our Marriott culture and values of "Putting People First" and "Serving Our World." May I say sir that in my experiences as a loyal customer, that your culture is alive and well and I see it everytime that I stay at one of your properties. It is that culture that sets you apart from your competitors. I by no means am your biggest customer, but the culture that you have created always makes me feel like and am. Kudos to you to sticking to your core beliefs and principles and for building a company that makes me proud to be a customer.

Mr. Marriott,
I would like to recommend a correction for your resume... You are an Eagle Scout! Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.
All the best wishes for you and your family.

Dear Marriott! I have spent 5 years with the marriott hotels in India, and have also worked with three more hotels companies, but no other company can match marriott, and I am so proud to have worked with such an amazing culture! thank you so much for building such a fantastic company and culture! it will take years for any other company to catch with marriott! Though I have drifted apart from marriott, but I know I belong to that Family. And all the very best to your new role, I am sure there is much more to come from you in this new role as a Exec chairman. kudus to marriott.

In regards to your sustainability initiatives I was wondering if you have ever heard of PermaFrost. Powertron Global is out of Maryland and produces this product, and Maryland is now giving rebates with its use. I work for Monsen Engineering in NJ and we currently work with this product. Con Ed has also officially signed off on it and is giving rebates with its use, I mention this because it validates our product. This is something you want to look into because it is a simple sustainability solution that doesn't require changing the habits of people. I could find no way to contact any of Marriotts sustainability people so I figured your blog would be the next best place. www.powertronglobal.com is the site, check it out, it may be worth your time. Have a great day.

Dear Bill,

Wish you all the best for your new position, when i read your words i really becoming proud more and more about our company, its matter of goals and vision if you have it you will reach to whatever you want, and Marriott is the best company to support their employee, congratulations again and keep it up to be close to your team all the team and hear from the front line as you hearing from the leaders, sometimes you will find the talent in the young people which can make different with our business. All the best

I have worked for numerous Marriott properties franchise and corporate, as well as some competitors. I always come back to Marriott Marriott is the trendsetter in this industry. I remember when Marriott went nonsmoking and people thought we would loose buissness because of it. Since then ive seen cities become nonsmoking. I would love to come back and work at a corporate managed porperty.

good.

Dear Mr. Marriott
You are doing lots of travelling and I think you should personally pick and train some people from our hotels who wants to have a future managerial career in hospitality business and I am volunteer for that myself :)

So happy you will still be visiting our hotels! I have fond memories of my first years with Marriott (1979 at Newport Beach Marriott) and your dad and mom coming to visit!Hopefully you will get to share some of the trips with your dear wife. In these high-tech times it is so nice to get the feeling that we still belong to a "family" business!

Mr. Marriott,

Thank you for the reminder how our many years of experiences
allows us all to be a CEO in our own everyday roles. I am currently a Front Desk Ambasador, SHS Glendale Arizona, with 41 years of experience interacting with guest. My first job was with Stouffers Hotel in Indianapolis at 15 when my day signed for me to be a Bus girl, Dishwasher, Room Service, Banquet preparer and Hat Check. I learned the Spirt to Serve way back then and appreciate even today with all your experiences you take the time to share with the Marriott family. Thank you for still putting people first staring with the workers makes me proud to spend each day taking care of our Guest.
Just keep doing what you're doing as an Executive Chairman, it reminds me of the saying "The Road to Success is Always Under Construction". Every opportunity is an opporutnity to learn and do it better. It's my pleasure sir to have fun at Marriott.

Dear Mr. Marriott, just watched your interview with Neil Cavuto. Excellent.

Can you look in on Abaco Club on Winding Bay, Abaco Bahamas. We are homeowners there.

Thanks so much for the high standards you set. You are unquestionably the leader in the industry. Continued success. Congratulations on operating with integrity and putting a priority on serving customers.

Hotels have the finest food service physical plants and serve the worst and most expensive food. I spent most of my working life as either a executive chef or food and beverage director. I am proud that the service I oversaw exceeded rooms division revenue. It was done by giving five star service and value. At the heart was a staff that loved to serve. I empowered them to deal with any matter when it came serving their guests and backed them up even when they made some poor choices.

When you travel your properties let the employees know that they are trusted and valued. They are your revenue front line. A happy, warm smiling staff always equal happy guests.

I met you once in Manila. You impressed me as a good man. I wish you all the best in your new job.
