Give Me a Break

April 11, 2016
JWM at Camelback with Family
Celebrating my recent birthday with my family at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort.

According to a recent study done by the U.S. Travel Association’s “Project: Time Off” campaign, American workers report using almost a full week less of vacation leave than they did 20 years ago. And, only about 60% of American workers use all of their time off.

What’s the result? Stressed-out, overwhelmed and unhappy workers. The study says “wasted vacation days undermine our personal, business and economic well-being.”

I couldn’t agree more. Time off from work gives me a chance to reconnect with my family. It gives me a break from my hectic schedule and allows me time to reflect on the work I’ve done and the work I need to do in the future.

One of my most favorite places to visit is the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort in Arizona. For nearly 50 years, my family has spent spring break at this beautiful

hotel. My father loved Camelback. It was very special to him—and now to me.

I’ve also spent the last few Christmas holidays at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa—another one of my favorite hotels.

So many memories have been made with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I treasure the times we’ve spent there… getting away from busy schedules and work demands—just to reconnect with one another.

Don’t be a “work martyr.” Do your job well and work hard, but take the vacation you deserve. In the end it makes you more fulfilled. Your family will be better served and your work will be more focused and more productive.

Take a break to make memories with those you love. Maybe stop in at the Camelback Inn or Harbor Beach – or any one of our other 4,400 properties – to recharge, reconnect and come back to the workforce feeling refreshed.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Dear Mr. Bill,

I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday greetings and God bless you with a long happy life full of love and every thing amazing in your life.
I'm really so happy to be a Marriott Member long time ago and I will be forever.

Take care of your self you are an amazing business man, father, grandfather, wish you all the best.

I started working for Marriott 30 years ago at the Harbor Beach Resort. It always tickled me that our guest were paying hundreds of dollars to stay there and I got paid to be there. We've renovated the Courtyard were I am now, made it through season, and are excelling with our GSS. Kids get out of school June 8th and we are on vacation. Give me a break!

thanks for sharing. I too love both Camelback and Harborbeach.

I love Camelback Inn! Family gatherings and routines are so important. "Same time, next year" is important to create lasting family memories. Your father, you, your sons and your grandsons have carried on the tradition. My family enjoys special places, too, and we return to them year after year. I believe your trip to next yr's Camelback vacation will coincide with a big birthday. Just having your family around is probably the best gift of all.

I couldn't agree more! I have always used my allotted vacation time.

I remember a few years ago a friend and I used my associate discount to stay at the Camelback. It so happened it was the week that you were there too. We kept hoping to run into you but missed the opportunity.

It is one of our favorite hotels too!

Agreed! Time with those you love is the most precious gift.

We will be back at Camelback in October for our 30th wedding anniversary and I could t agree more. My husband broke his neck earlier this year and by the grace of God suffered no lasting effects. We realized then that tomorrow is not a promise but a gift....take time to make the memories

We stretch our budget to get to Camelback every other year because it is such a wonderful get away. We are always so sad to leave. In all the world only one. Staff is always so above expectations and for us Ohioans it really is heaven on earth in the desert!

Thanks for the memories we have made there and those we will be fortunate enough to yet make!

Happy Birthday Mr Marriott may god bless you with many more !!

I totally agree with Mr Marriott about giving ourselves a break and it will really improve our productivity.

It is always a privilege to have work life balance while pursuing interest in this amazing company.

Dear Mr Marriott,

Thank you for the congratulatory message on my 5th anniversary with Marriott.

Having met your parents several times at the Boston Stake Center
years ago I never dreamt I would work for Marriot or love my job so very much.

I was surprised when I was hired at an advanced age and each year I tease that if you can still be working maybe you'll let me stay till I'm at least 95!!

It's wonderful to work at a company that has such a great reputation, where we all strive to do our best to help our customers and represent such a great company.

Thank you again for your well wishes,
Sandra Umina

I love this communication and a great eye opener for lots of associates. I'm planning my vacation next month after 5 years. I'm so excited for it. Thank you for this awesome communication.

Bill, I remember well our introductioin to Camelback. A few of us were up in Canada getting organized for the ASAE convention in Montreal. We got your call telling us to fly out to Phoenix and take a look at the first "pre owned" hotel in our collection. We got off the plane in our three piece suits greeted by the Arizona July/August (?) and almost dropped in our tracks. The limo picked us up to take us over to the property. We noted the car handels on parked cars wrapped in cotton enablimg the owners to open the fried door handles and cars parked under corregated green plastic. When we reached the entrance to Camelback we noted that Del Webbs Mountain Shadows across the street lawns were nice and green and our were brown. I asked the driver how come/ His reply was "We haven't painted ours yet !"

Ahhhhh. The Camelback Inn. It has been about ten years but what a beautiful and amazing place to go to unwind. Truly one-of-a-kind spot!
