The month of May is always a time of celebration for our company. We plan a number of exciting events around the company anniversary, May 20. Each year I look forward to one of my favorite events… the Awards of Excellence gala. We recognize the best of the best of our company… a special few associates and hotels that go above and beyond the already stellar service our associates give.
It’s an important part of our company culture to recognize our people – in fact, it is the fabric of our company – taking good care of our associates so they’ll take good care of the guests.
We just held our gala event earlier this week. I had a chance to meet with this year’s honorees. Each of the hotels and associates represented at the event are truly exceptional, I wish I could highlight them all. Here’s a few I’d like to mention:
Rosane Lucas, Chief Concierge at the JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro, starts every day by asking “Who am I going to make happy today?” She applies that principle to both guests and associates, even paying for medicine and school tuition for associates’ children.
Originally from Haiti, Savenie Casimir-Marc has been an associate at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida, for 14 years. Savenie's perseverance is extraordinary. She lost her husband in a tragic accident two years ago. She found hope again by coming to work, interacting with guests and leaning on her fellow associates. Savenie stays strong for her seven daughters, as she wants to be a positive role model for them.
Won Choi came to the U.S. from Korea, with very little knowledge of the English language. He worked in a factory and even a graveyard, but was later hired as a front desk clerk at one of our hotels. He credits his father with instilling in him a strong work ethic. Won worked hard over the years and is now the General Manager at the Courtyard Medford Airport in Oregon.
Have you met some of the best of our best? I would love to hear your stories of exceptional service from our associates around the world.
I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.
