I mentioned last week that May is a big month for our company. We’ve got lots to celebrate during the anniversary month of our company’s founding. We spend a lot of time focusing on our terrific associates, applauding them for jobs well done throughout the year. We have a week-long event called Associate Appreciation Week.

We also set aside time during this week to invest in our global communities. Marriott International locations worldwide participate in “Spirit to Serve Our Communities Day.” It’s a day when our people are given time off to participate in an activity of their choice to help improve their communities.

STS InfogrpahicYou see, we want the communities where we do business to be better because we are there. We want our communities to see our hotels as positive influences on the places they call home.

For example, in Hong Kong, associates at the JW Marriott will help raise awareness about the water shortage in China’s Northwest Mainland. In Europe, our people at the Renaissance Amsterdam will work to beautify a hospice for seriously ill children.

And this year, more than 2,000 associates from our headquarters building will be heading out to serve at 29 different projects in the Metro DC area, including constructing a playground at a bilingual charter school.

What I love most about Spirit To Serve Our Communities Day is that we don't stop there. This isn't just a one-day event for us. All year long our properties are committed and invested in making their communities better. Just recently, the Berlin Marriott received the Alice S. Marriott Award for Community Service… an award that celebrates the hotel team that best exemplifies my mother’s timeless philosophy… “By generously giving of our time, energy and resources, we enrich the lives of others."

I am so proud of the legacy my mother left and of each of our associates that strive to make our world a better place.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Mr. Marriott, as I came in to work today, the first thing I saw when I opened my internet browser was this Spirit to Serve blog. It is a pillar of our company that myself and our restaurant council team in the Atlanta area are extremely passionate about. This weekend, our restaurant council team participated in the build of beautiful home for a family that would call this home "their first home." The new homeowner, a single mother of 2 makes a big impact on today's youth as she is a bus driver for the city of Atlanta. She has worked hard ensuring all of our children make it to school on time and most importantly safe. It was a pleasure to work with Habitat for Humanity to build this home. I wanted to share some pictures, however, I am unable to do so on this comment field, but would love to share with you via e-mail or other means.

I look forward to many more opportunities to give back and serve our community.

Yours in Hospitality,

Etienne Monat
Director of Restaurants (Marriott Atlanta Airport)
Chairman of the Restaurant Council-Atlanta
