Here’s to the Journey!

TBT Key Bridge

I want you to think back to your childhood and think about what you wanted to be when you grew up. Maybe you wanted to be a doctor, an astronaut, or even a professional athlete. Personally, I wanted nothing more than to carry on the legacy that my parents started. It’s all I’ve ever known as a professional and I’m fortunate to be living my dream to this day.

Passion and personal growth help you create a rewarding career for yourself. When my parents set off to open their root beer stand in Washington, D.C. 90 years ago, it was their love of learning and exploration that got them there, and took them beyond. They didn’t know their journey would eventually lead to rewarding careers for hundreds of thousands of Marriott associates as well.

Likewise, I didn’t know my journey would be in hotels when I started at Marriott. Back in the 1950’s, I saw hotels as a great extension of the Marriott brand, but my father was less enthusiastic. The first hotel had just been built yet none of us really knew what we were getting into. I went to him and asked, “Why don’t you let me run the hotel, and I’ll learn?”

My father was reluctant, but my persistence resulted in my defining opportunity. I would go on to become the General Manager of Marriott’s first ever hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel. I worked my butt off to prove that the hotel business was a worthwhile venture. Today, Marriott sits as the largest hotel company in the world. You never know which opportunity will be your big break, so work tirelessly for each one you get.

Our company has always been about putting people first and that means more than just providing an environment for our associates to work efficiently. This means giving them opportunities to develop, encouraging mentorship and helping each one of us find happiness and wellbeing.  It means giving people the opportunity to pursue their passions and dreams inside and outside the workplace. Whether it’s learning a new skill, being a part of a great team, or making a difference in the community, these are the things that matter to our associates.

This is especially true for our newest group of up-and-coming associates. To them, a job represents more than just a paycheck. It represents a chance to grow both personally and professionally and to contribute to something bigger than themselves. We’ve worked tirelessly to provide that opportunity to our associates.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my 65 years at Marriott, it’s that there is no shortage of opportunities. You can begin in the kitchen, at the front desk, or in one of countless other areas of our business—our full range of Marriott job opportunities can be found on our careers page. It’ll be your first step on a wonderful journey.

Where will your journey take you?

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

I have been part of the Marriott family since March 2017. It is my pleasure to work for this company. I take pride in what I do here and very grateful that God has giving me this opportunity to work for Marriott. I hope to advance further in the company as I continue my journey here. Great story of how Marriott began its history.

I love the photo! What's the caption? Thank you for sharing.

Always glad to comment on Marriott. We committed to Marriott years before we retired, and are now Lifetime Platinum, and Chairmans Club owners for MVC. We are closing in on 90 countries visited, and I'm only 72..and my wife is 69. We'll celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniv on Dec 2 at the MVC in Aruba. We celebrated our 45th at the Marriott Cologne...and put our lock on the bridge over the Rhine. With our remaining years you can bet Marriott will be there beside us...and when we pass our ownerships to our kids and grandkids, the dream will continue.all my best to Bill and his family.

I remember first hearing you, Mr. Marriott speak at Johnson & Wales and admired you then. This post, even more inspiring makes me miss my days working at Marriott.

Thank you!

I retired from a long and very fulfilling career a few months ago. I can say that I was very fortunate to have positions that offered me opportunities to grow and truly enjoy the work-side of my life.

I have been a Marriott fan since I first stayed at the Maui Marriott (the 100th Marriott) right after it opened in 1983. Seeing Marriott grow and following the company over the years I have thought that a Marriott career would have worked for me too!

First time reader.

Interesting read.

Very inspirational...thank you for sharing your journey with us, Mr. Marriott!
