Here’s to the Journey!

I want you to think back to your childhood and think about what you wanted to be when you grew up. Maybe you wanted to be a doctor, an astronaut, or even a professional athlete. Personally, I wanted nothing more than to carry on the legacy that my parents started. It’s all I’ve ever known as a professional and I’m fortunate to be living my dream to this day.

Passion and personal growth help you create a rewarding career for yourself. When my parents set off to open their root beer stand in Washington, D.C. 90 years ago, it was their love of learning and exploration that got them there, and took them beyond. They didn’t know their journey would eventually lead to rewarding careers for hundreds of thousands of Marriott associates as well.

Likewise, I didn’t know my journey would be in hotels when I started at Marriott. Back in the 1950’s, I saw hotels as a great extension of the Marriott brand, but my father was less enthusiastic. The first hotel had just been built yet none of us really knew what we were getting into. I went to him and asked, “Why don’t you let me run the hotel, and I’ll learn?”

My father was reluctant, but my persistence resulted in my defining opportunity. I would go on to become the General Manager of Marriott’s first ever hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel. I worked my butt off to prove that the hotel business was a worthwhile venture. Today, Marriott sits as the largest hotel company in the world. You never know which opportunity will be your big break, so work tirelessly for each one you get. 

Our company has always been about putting people first and that means more than just providing an environment for our associates to work efficiently. This means giving them opportunities to develop, encouraging mentorship and helping each one of us find happiness and wellbeing.  It means giving people the opportunity to pursue their passions and dreams inside and outside the workplace. Whether it’s learning a new skill, being a part of a great team, or making a difference in the community, these are the things that matter to our associates.

This is especially true for our newest group of up-and-coming associates. To them, a job represents more than just a paycheck. It represents a chance to grow both personally and professionally and to contribute to something bigger than themselves. We’ve worked tirelessly to provide that opportunity to our associates.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my 65 years at Marriott, it’s that there is no shortage of opportunities. A Tradition Worth Celebrating

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the 90th anniversary of our company—a tremendous milestone for us. I know that we didn’t get to where we are by luck. It has been the hard work and dedication of each and every associate who ever bore the Marriott name tag—all working to give their best to our guests.

My father founded this company on his principle “take good care of the associates and they’ll take care of the guests.” One of the ways we take care of our people is through our recognition programs. The pinnacle recognition program is our Awards of Excellence. Every May, coinciding with our company anniversary, we recognize the best of the best associates and hotels providing exceptional service and making memorable experiences for our guests and associates.

This year we recognize nine associates and four hotels who consistently go above and beyond for our guests and associates. I could write at length about each one, but I’ll highlight just a few here.

Hervé Vandendrice is a concierge at the Brussels Marriott Hotel Grand Place in Belgium. He considers himself a “master of ceremonies,” directing the busy lobby activities in his hotel. For more than 15 years, Hervé has been a concierge at the hotel in the city he was raised in. But nothing challenged him more than the Brussels terrorist attacks in March 2016. Once news of the airport bombing reached the hotel, Hervé took proactive steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of his guests and associates.

At The Andaman, A Luxury Collection Resort Langkawi in Malaysia, Randy Rivera leads a team to care for the hotel’s beachfront, pool grounds and the guests who visit there. Randy takes his role as caretaker of the beach very seriously. After the tsunami of 2004, the coral reef just beyond the hotel’s beach suffered significant damage. Randy helped lead a team of scientists and hotel associates to develop the Coral Conservation Project. Believed to be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, the project includes a coral nursery, artificial reef models and a marine life laboratory.

In one of the world’s “most livable cities,” the ladies and gentlemen at The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna set about to make a positive impact on their community. They developed an entire social and environmental responsibility program based on supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, including ending hunger and poverty, and promoting quality education and economic growth, among others. From the newest hire to the general manager, every lady and gentleman in the hotel is committed and passionate about giving back.
