I want you to think back to your childhood and think about what you wanted to be when you grew up. Maybe you wanted to be a doctor, an astronaut, or even a professional athlete. Personally, I wanted nothing more than to carry on the legacy that my parents started. It’s all I’ve ever known as a professional and I’m fortunate to be living my dream to this day.
Passion and personal growth help you create a rewarding career for yourself. When my parents set off to open their root beer stand in Washington, D.C. 90 years ago, it was their love of learning and exploration that got them there, and took them beyond. They didn’t know their journey would eventually lead to rewarding careers for hundreds of thousands of Marriott associates as well.
Likewise, I didn’t know my journey would be in hotels when I started at Marriott. Back in the 1950’s, I saw hotels as a great extension of the Marriott brand, but my father was less enthusiastic. The first hotel had just been built yet none of us really knew what we were getting into. I went to him and asked, “Why don’t you let me run the hotel, and I’ll learn?”
My father was reluctant, but my persistence resulted in my defining opportunity. I would go on to become the General Manager of Marriott’s first ever hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel. I worked my butt off to prove that the hotel business was a worthwhile venture. Today, Marriott sits as the largest hotel company in the world. You never know which opportunity will be your big break, so work tirelessly for each one you get.
Our company has always been about putting people first and that means more than just providing an environment for our associates to work efficiently. This means giving them opportunities to develop, encouraging mentorship and helping each one of us find happiness and wellbeing. It means giving people the opportunity to pursue their passions and dreams inside and outside the workplace. Whether it’s learning a new skill, being a part of a great team, or making a difference in the community, these are the things that matter to our associates.
This is especially true for our newest group of up-and-coming associates. To them, a job represents more than just a paycheck. It represents a chance to grow both personally and professionally and to contribute to something bigger than themselves. We’ve worked tirelessly to provide that opportunity to our associates.
