Giving Small Business a Helping Hand

Posted:09/29/201012:18 PM

Snagit1 It’s been often repeated that small business is the engine that drives the U.S. economy. President Obama has said it and so have Presidents George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan before him.

Not unlike a lot of entrepreneurs, my parents started their company as a very small business with big ideas for the future.  When they opened a nine-stool A&W root beer stand in Washington 83 years ago, they believed they were on to something good. Over the years, their small business grew larger and larger and now we’re listed as one of the Fortune 500.

Welcoming the Algonquin Hotel to Our Autograph Collection

Posted:09/21/2010 4:53 PM

NYRM_901_Algonquin_Ribbon_AP_Images I made a special visit to the famed Algonquin Hotel in New York City to officially welcome it to our new Autograph Collection.

We announced the Autograph Collection late last year, which includes independent hotels - each with its own unique identity and personality.

The Algonquin is the first New York City hotel to join the collection. Through the Autograph Collection, our guests now have the option to stay at one of the city's most unique and famous hotels, burning and earning Marriott Rewards points too.

Opened in 1902, the hotel is the oldest operating hotel in New York City. Its storied history includes a long list of "firsts" - the hotel was the first to offer electronic key cards, and the first to welcome women traveling alone.

Launching a Loyalty Program for Our Ritz-Carlton Customers

Posted:09/14/2010 4:07 PM
Ritz Carlton Rewards Platinum Card During my travels around the world, I am often asked by our hotel guests when The Ritz-Carlton hotels will have a loyalty program like Marriott Rewards. Well, I am pleased to tell you that we have just launched The Ritz-Carlton Rewards.

This is more than just another points program. Like Marriott Rewards, members will be able to earn points toward free stays at Ritz-Carlton hotels, but what makes this program  really unique are the extraordinary experiences that will only be available to The Ritz-Carlton Rewards members.  We’ve lined up some of the most exclusive names in travel and fashion including Abercrombie & Kent, Neiman Marcus, National Geographic Expeditions Photography Workshops and Vera Wang bridal to provide special offerings to our members.

John Legend and Courtyard Put on a Show in Grand Central Terminal

Posted:09/07/2010 5:44 PM
John Legend Performing in the Courtyard Refresthing Business Lobby Replica in Grand Central Terminal There's a line in one of my favorite movies, Field of Dreams, "if you build it, they will come."  In our case, instead of a baseball diamond in an Iowa corn field, we’re building replicas of our Courtyard Refreshing Business lobby in Grand Central Terminal in New York City.  We’re also doing it at airports across America because we know that if you see it you definitely will come and stay.

In New York, Grammy Award-winning singer John Legend joined us for a lunch-time concert as we took over Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall to showcase the new lobby.  The design is modern and stylish and offers amenities like free WiFi, lots of seating and electrical outlets to stay connected, as well as a full service dining outlet called The Bistro.

ExecuStay - Marriott's Corporate Apartment Brand

Posted:09/01/2010 5:40 PM

Inside ExecuStay Boston Every year, I try to visit as many of our Marriott hotels as possible.  So far, in 2010, I've toured over 200 hotels in over 20 cities. Seeing the hotels keeps me close to the business and to our people.

Last month when I was in Boston I had the chance to visit a totally different kind of Marriott product. It's called ExecuStay.  It's a brand that provides completely furnished apartments for people needing temporary housing for a month or more.
