“Fast Forward” to a Great Career in Travel

January 22, 2013

Can you imagine that a record one billion people traveled outside their country in 2012?  That’s one in seven people on this earth.  Well, they really did.  I’ve always said that the travel industry offers the best jobs and the greatest opportunities of any business in the world.  I’ve never wanted to do anything else.  And now there’s this incredible statistic along with a recent study to prove it!  What a wonderful contribution it is to our economy.

Fast_ForwardThe US Travel Association just published a report – based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics – entitled “Fast Forward: Travel Creates Opportunities and Launches Careers.”  The report says, “Workers who begin their careers in travel achieve higher wages, have greater access to educational opportunities and enjoy better career progression.”

The report also states that since March of 2010, the travel industry has “added jobs 16 percent faster than the rest of the economy,” and that “travel jobs provide important, transferable skills that are indispensable to career success.”

None of this really surprises me.  Over the years, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job has been spreading the corporate culture of our company, a culture that promotes education and personal and professional development for our associates so they can be successful.  We call it “Opening Doors to a World of Opportunity.”

The travel industry is one of America’s top job creating sectors.  As an industry, travel injects $1.9 trillion into the U.S. economy every year, supporting 14.4 million jobs.  This is really a big story as we emerge from a recession, and Marriott is doing our best by hiring, training and promoting.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

Great information. I prefer to read this kind of post.

that is awesome that the Marriott is one of the 100 best companies to work for.

One billion people is huge number and you are absolutely right about the opportunities which ware there in this industry, because with globalization and the technological advancement this number will increase only because now people want to travel to remote and unexplored places. Biggest benefit of this as a career option is that one never gets bored and there are plenty of money making opportunities

We need to be aware that traveling for a job is not the same as travel on a vacation; it can be a great opportunity and rewarding. It can also be a lot of wear and tear - we really have to have the right personality to be on the road a lot

Thank you, Mr. Marriott, for making Marriott a great place to work and build a career!

I have never been in the travel industry, but am glad so many other dedicated people are. Almost all of my travel experiences have been positive and many of them memorable. My loyalty to Marriott is because of all of the wonderful associates that have chosen a career in the travel industry!
