People of Marriott International

May 31, 2015

Few things are more satisfying to me than the terrific blend of people we have at Marriott.

The first great team at Marriott was my dad and mom, and over the years they have been followed by many passionate teams that worked wonderfully across generations, gender, race, ethnicity, and many other attributes.

We have spent a lot of time and effort at Marriott focusing on the emerging generations of customers and associates. They are already contributing so much to the world, and their ability to harness new technologies and to innovate is fascinating.

I would like to take a moment to also express my appreciation to the Boomers and to my peers in, what some call, the Silent Generation – although I’m not sure how they let me into that club. I’ve been called many things in my life, but silent?

I am so appreciative of our long-tenured associates and their experience, knowledge and commitment. One of my most pleasant activities is sending length of service letters to them. It is especially gratifying to advise an associate that they have become a member of the Quarter Century Club. It comes with special perks and benefits.

Having leaders that have a deep commitment to the company and to serving our customers and associates is absolutely priceless. I have spent some time this winter at Marriott’s Harbor Beach Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. As I enjoyed this wonderful resort, I observed our General Manager, Karen Chastain, in action. A Marriott veteran of 23 years, she is out of her office visiting with our guests, associates and group customers. The hotel gets rave reviews from all these groups in our surveys. The owners are pleased with their financial returns.

As I have visited our hotels through the years, I often try and visit with the management team, especially in the larger properties. In our largest hotels, a General Manager will often have 25 years of experience and the rest of the leadership team also has an impressive background. They are progressive, and their experience and knowledge of the business supports their efforts to manage their properties through good times and bad. It makes a huge difference.

As always, I am so appreciative of the diversity of our team. I appreciate you all and will always be grateful for the outstanding job you do.

I’m Bill Marriott and thanks for helping me keep Marriott on the move.

I travel frequently (for business and pleasure) and always choose a Marriott hotel if available. I recently had one of the best Marriott experiences I've ever had at the Courtyard in Alcoa, TN because of the wonderful associates at that hotel. They went above and beyond - helped me address some work challenges - and accommodated my every need... This happened all three times I stayed there. I'd highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Tennessee.
